English grammar and usage come easily to me, and I can make them easier to you. Let me know what I can do to help you. I have two masters' degrees and a bachelor's degree in English and English-related subjects. I also have teaching experience and test-preparation experience.

When I was in middle and high school, I didn't have a tutor, but I wish I had. I didn't know how to write an essay until I went to college, and my SAT score could have been a lot better than it was. This is why I enjoy tutoring--by helping those students who have a lot of potential but who aren't getting the information they need to go that extra mile.

I can also tutor geography and history. When I was in high school, I tested out of both subjects. I find them as interesting as English, and I can make them interesting to you.

I've been teaching now for twenty years. Most of the classes I've taught have been English composition, but I've also taught English, American and world literature. I also have a year's experience with test preparation.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Art History

In 2010, I received an M.A. in humanities from the Florida State University, and I have taught humanities classes (which included art) at West Virginia State University and Mountain State University.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience teaching reading and writing to elementary students ranging from grades K through 6. From 1988 to 1989, I was a certified subsitute teacher in Logan County, West Virginia, where I taught special needs students (both academically and behaviorally challenged) at Amherstdale Elementary and Stirrat Grade. As well as teaching reading and writing at various learning levels, I also taught math, science, health, and social studies, again at various learning levels. One of my students tested out of one of my special needs classes. In Albany, Georgia, I also taught drama to students ranging from grades K through 5 at five different schools from 1999 to 2001.

Film

In 1992, I received an M.F.A. in film from the California Institute of the Arts. I have also taught Film Appreciation at Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College.

Phonics

I am cerified to teach phonics using the Laubach method.

Public Speaking

This course helps develop a student's ability to speak confidently and effectively in a variety of public-speaking situations. A student prepares and presents different types of speeches for various situations. Particular attention is paid to style, persuasion, competency, and credibility. I have taught Speech Fundamentals for seventeen years at Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College, West Virginia State University, and Mountain State University.

Theatre

In 1988, I graduated with a B.F.A. in theatre, and from 1989 to 1992, I took theatre classes toward an M.F.A. in film at the California Institute of the Arts. From 1994 to 1996, I was a Speech/Theatre Instructor at Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College, where I also directed two plays per semester. From 1996 to 1998, I served as the Road Manager for the Theatre West Virginia Acting Company in Beckley, West Virginia, and from 1999 to 2001, I served as the Education Director at Theatre Albany in Albany Georgia, where I also directed children's plays. From 2001 to 2002, I was an Assistant Professor of Theatre at Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia, where I taught Theatre History, acting, and directing for the stage.
