Teaching isn't just a job or a career, it is what I live to do. Whether I am in the classroom or at the library helping a struggling student, this is what I love. I have been in education for more than twenty years and am constantly looking for new ways that will engage my students, from new strategies to new technologies. It is my goal to make sure that whoever is in my class has the resources to be successful.
I believe that every student should have the opportunity to learn on their level. If a student is struggling then there is a reason and they should be afforded the chance to have the best instruction available. All students deserve the chance to be successful and become confident in their abilities.
I am certified by the state of Virginia in PreK - 6th grade in all subjects.
As an elementary teacher I have been teaching science for many years. Science is all around us, the iPad or video game that we play is all based on science; that is why I find it so interesting.
Proper grammar is very important in all aspects of education. Writing and speaking properly allows prospective teachers or future employers to take notice and be more aware of you as a candidate for a class or position.
Phonics has been around as long as I have been teaching, and it is a great way for emergent or struggling readers to learn read. I have worked with Reading Mastery through SRA as well as the Learning to Read Program through Hought and Mifflin.
It is hard to find interesting proofreading activities, and in today's SOLs you will find those objectives starting in the third grade. In order to make this more interesting to students, I wrote a short story that was full of errors. Correcting these errors was the goal in this activity. The students who participated in this activity sseemed to enjoy it.
Reading is one of my greatest enjoyments, but I find that many students will read but not understand what they are reading. I use interactive activities to help with comprehension, which has met with wonderful results.
When it comes to spelling, I have found that boys seem to find something else to talk about or do, but using games and competition brought them back. I have found that allowing students to be more actively engaged in their own learning has positive results.
I took a class on study skills and test taking skills and have taught this in summer school and as an MS resource.
Learning vocabulary can be challenging. I find interactive activities are more helpful than memorization.
I love to write as much as I love to read. Learning to write sentences properly can be boring, but learning to write them about your favorite topic can change everything. Think about it. Would you want your favorite actor, singer or athlete to read one of your fan letters and be unable to get through it for all the errors? I didn't think so.
