My name is Isaac M. and I am a 2013 graduate from Marshall University with a degree in Molecular Biology and 4.0 GPA. My plans are to get my Master's Degree in Education from Marshall and be a high school biology and chemistry teacher. At Marshall, I was one of six Yeager Scholars in my class. The Society of Yeager Scholars is a program that provides a unique undergraduate experience by way of things such as a more rigorous undergraduate course load, a study abroad experience at Oxford University, and an emphasis on leadership development among many other things.

I think my qualifications speak for themselves through things such my degree, GPA, standardized test scores, and completion of the Yeager Program. However, we all know that those things say little about how well I can communicate and help individual students learn. But rest assured! I have also been involved the past two years in the Learning Assistant Program at Marshall. This is basically a tutoring program on steroids specific for freshmen biology students. I meet twice a week with small groups of students to review and go over class material. Through this program I have had to deal with a variety of different students who all learn in different ways and can proudly say that most of those students benefited greatly from the experience, whether that be a student going from failing to passing, raising a grade, or the A students who just attend sessions to solidify material. It is through this program that I realized how much I actually enjoy helping students learn material and got pushed toward teaching for a career.

With that being said, it is hard to say how I tutor because I have found that I need to adjust my methodology depending on the student. Test taking strategies can be just as important as content at times, especially for standardized tests. But once some basic strategy is down, the student is in the drivers seat as to how the content is approached. My main emphasis is understanding the content at a deeper level and avoiding straight surface level memorization, but that is not so much a tutoring technique for me as it is me thinking that is how all learning should be done.

I am aware that there are students who are not academically inclined, and I am more than happy to help those struggling students reach whatever goals they set for themselves. However, I think that many times (if not most of the time) students are not academically disinclined, they just have not found the right teacher or the study technique that works best for them. With that being said, I would love to see if I am that teacher and help them become better students so don't hesitate to get in touch with me!

ACT English

Having received a 31 on my ACT English, I know what areas to focus on when studying for this test. Using a combination of standardized test taking strategies as well as highlighting what specific areas need to be studied (grammar, subject-verb agreement, etc.), I can improve a person's ACT English score.

ACT Math

Having received a 34 on my ACT Math, I know what areas to focus on when studying for this test. Using a combination of standardized test taking strategies as well as highlighting what specific areas need to be studied, I can improve a person's ACT math score.

ACT Reading

Having received a 34 on my ACT Reading, I know what areas to focus on when studying for this test. Using a combination of standardized test taking strategies as well as highlighting what specific areas need to be studied, I can improve a person's ACT reading score.

ACT Science

Science has been my favorite content area since high school, but the ACT science portion is not really about knowing scientific facts. It is about learning how to read the graphs and extracting information, whether you comprehend it or not. I help design strategies that help students realize and take advantage of this in order to raise their science score.

Algebra 1

Algebra 1 and 2 were my some of my favorite classes in high school, because numbers make sense to me. Struggles in algebra often arise because students try to memorize their way through instead of understanding, or they just are not one of those people who numbers make sense to. As a tutor, I understand this disconnect, and focus a lot on making students understand the math being studied so that the numbers make more sense to them, and so that on a test they can think their way through problems instead of simply trying to recall little tricks or formulas.

Algebra 2

Algebra 1 and 2 were my some of my favorite classes in high school, because numbers make sense to me. Struggles in algebra often arise because students try to memorize their way through instead of understanding, or they just are not one of those people who numbers make sense to. As a tutor, I understand this disconnect, and focus a lot on making students understand the math being studied so that the numbers make more sense to them, and so that on a test they can think their way through problems instead of simply trying to recall little tricks or formulas.

Biology

I just graduated with a degree in molecular biology, and have been tutoring freshmen level biology at Marshall University for 2 years now. I have developed many different techniques for students of different learning types, and have seen many successes because of this.

Chemistry

I graduated with a minor in chemistry, but have also had all of the chemistry classes that a high school chemistry teacher is required to take. My content knowledge, along with my tutoring experience, makes me particularly effective in helping students who struggle in this subject.

GED

The GED is a test which often times, like any other standardized tests, tests your ability to take a test more than anything else! Knowing this, I can focus on techniques which make you an overall better test take for the GED and whatever other test you may face in the future. The content on the GED is also something I can help you with as demonstrated in my proficiency in all of the other subjects on my profile which show up on the GED.

Genetics

As a molecular biology major, most of my classes always had a genetics portion to it. I received a 4.0 GPA for all of my classes so I know what I'm doing. Also, while at Marshall University, I did research as an undergraduate on fruit flies with my genetics professor, so I have experience to back up the classroom knowledge!

GRE

Having received a 322 on my new revised GRE, I know what areas to focus on when studying for this test. Using a combination of standardized test taking strategies as well as highlighting what specific areas need to be studied, I can improve a person's GRE score.
