Learning/Teaching new, exciting subjects is my favorite hobby (in addition to biking, reading, gardening, and DIY projects)! So, I've been teaching either college or middle school for 25 years. In '82, I graduated from Ohio State University with a B.A. in Communication. That same year, my OSU professors recommended me for a graduate school teaching position at UW-Milwaukee. I could earn my Master's Degree while teaching undergraduates communication skills--the TOP SKILLS deemed most important by FORTUNE companies: Public Speaking, Interpersonal Communication, Conflict Resolution, Problem Solving, Attentive Listening, Oral Interpretation (making speeches, dramatic readings, etc.), and much more. Though this was my first teaching experience, based on student surveys, I was chosen as the best graduate teaching assistant in the department. This changed my life's direction.
From that experience, I learned I LOVED inspiring students to face their fears, overcome weaknesses, and gain self-confidence. So, I added on a third "degree"--my teaching license. I am certified as a professional educator to teach 1st-9th grades (all subjects). Since 1992, I've been teaching 6th--8th-grade students Math/Algebra, Language Arts, Reading, French, Academic & Creative Writing, Dramatic Skills, and Basic Latin and French.
Philosophically, I believe that students need to trust in and be inspired by a teacher in order to want to learn. I understand how to nurture the students' self-confidence while exciting their sense of wonder at the many mysteries that can be experienced through studying new, wonderful subjects. This is the art of teaching, at which I excel.
There's only one thing I love more than being a teacher/learner, and that's being the mother of David (24) and Anne (15). We are a small but very happy family, which includes two dogs and two cats. David, a HS valedictorian, has graduated from UW-Madison with a degree in Computer Science; while Anne, a High Honors sophomore, is interested in graphic and web design. I am blessed to have a fun-loving, hilarious family at home and a brilliant career teaching students the wonders of learning.
