Reading and Math Proficiency for K-3 students.

I taught first grade for 13 years and tutored elementary students during the summer. The most rewarding part of teaching is watching students reach moments when they discover and master something they didn't know before. I believe all children can learn when someone believes in them and understands that there are many paths to learning and different methods to get there. Children deserve patience, respect, and the best of ourselves.

Elementary (K-6th)

I posses a BA Degree in elementary education. I have taught first grade for 13 years. In addition, I have tutored elementary students in language arts during summers. I look forward to helping your student.

Phonics

Phonics is a method of teaching about the way language sounds are represented by letters. In reading, sounds are blended to form words. In spelling, sounds are separated into letters. For 13 years, I taught first-graders to read using the phonetic approach. I believe it is the most effective method to ensure reading success.

Study Skills

Young children have short attention spans and tend to study best in groups or one-on-one with an adult tutor. I don't recommend heavy study time outside of tutoring sessions because time for playing and refreshing in imperative at these ages. I shared study skills with my first grade students as part of the normal school day experience.
