I graduated in 2008 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree. My major is in Humanistic Studies with an emphasis in Linguistics and Teaching English as a Second Language. My most recent job was at a middle school as a Title 1 Reading Teacher Aide. There, I helped 8th graders that were in the "gray area" of Reading and writing. I made lesson plans that involved oral reading, vocabulary, and writing skills. I incorporated fun into it as well, since these students were missing their "specials" to come to my class. At the end of each quarter, they were required to take MAPS tests and WKCE Tests. Their scores from before joining were about a 200-211, which is pretty low for 8th grade level. (That is about a 6th grade reading level). After being in my class, a few left, because they tested out by scoring a 225. One 8th grader went from a 200 to a 240, after 3 quarters of being in my class. Needless to say, I loved that job, but because of budget cuts, the school district no longer needed my services. At least I can say that I truly helped these students and hopefully they will keep their skills when they attend the high school next year.
My strongest skills are in reading and writing. I started reading when I was 3 years old and by the time I was in first grade, I could read books that were meant for middle schoolers. I started writing stories and poems as well. Some of my favorite pastimes include: crossword puzzles, word searches, logic puzzles, brain games, IQ tests, playing scrabble or trivia. I also practice my violin, exercise and dance as well. I started playing the violin when I was 6 years old, and I started taking dance lessons when I was 4 years old. I'm also interested in other cultures, as well as their language and customs. Although I am not fluent in any other languages other than English, I have taken Spanish, Japanese, French, American sign language, and I self-study Hmong. I would be able to tutor basic Spanish, basic Japanese, or basic French.
I would be willing to travel as far north as Green Bay, WI, as far west as Appleton, WI, and as far south as Milwaukee, WI, depending on the hourly pay and how many hours I would be needed.
I guess that is all for now. I look forward to working with you :)
