Hello! My name is Chris. I am an English (ESL) teacher who has a lot of passion for the field of teaching English to speakers of other languages. I have certificates in TESOL and EFL, 10+ years of teaching experience (in California and Wisconsin), and a Master's degree in TESOL. I have completed student teaching under several Master Teacher Professionals, and am a member of TESOL International. I believe that learning English should be active and fun. I also believe in teaching culture with English, so that my students not only know how to speak, but how to answer questions and converse appropriately. I work with my students to set measurable goals that we work toward with every lesson.

Aside from teaching English, I love to workout, watch sports, grill, and travel. My students include people from Mexico, Central America, South America, Turkey, Mongolia, Russia, German, Poland, Bulgaria, and South Korea. I still keep in touch with many of them!

Business

I have 20 years of experience in the business field. My experience includes sales, corporate and retail training, production and materials planning, purchasing, expediting, marketing, and restauranting to name a few. I have worked for global corporations and small shops. I even have experience in the fields of nursery and landscaping.

For one global retail chain, I started out as a sales clerk, worked my way up from assistant manager to manager, area trainer to corporate trainer, and eventually worked in the field as a regional manager in charge of sales, training, marketing, and purchasing. At one point with this company, I was regularly consulted in store planning meetings about possible store layouts. Here, I would work with other planners to determine overall store layout, traffic patterns, and equipment placement. I was also regularly negotiating equipment and store maintenance contracts as well as purchasing, expediting, and retiring equipment. As a field manager, I regularly held 3-day training seminars to review marketing strategies, sales targets, and financial reports.

In the nursery (plant) and landscape field, I began as a sales clerk and merchandiser. I later became a whole goods and color buyer. Later, I also held the position of perennial and shrub buyer.
As a landscaper, I owned and operated my own business where I designed, presented, installed, and maintained specialty landscapes for multiple clients. I employed a part-time crew to help me, and occasionally worked with or subcontracted out jobs to other tradesmen (electrical, sprinklers, cement work, etc). Later, I also maintained a large greenhouse where plants were propagated for use in commercial and residential landscapes.

I have an Associates of Science in Business. I also have a Bachelors Degree in Business Management, where I graduated at the top of my class (Summa Cum Laude). My capstone project was on organizational leadership and communication.

ESL/ESOL

I began teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) in April of 2004, and it has since become my passion. I love it!!! I have experience teaching adult basic to advanced English skills in speaking, writing, listening, and reading. I also teach life skills such as: how to find a job, improving job skills at work, computers, how to go to the doctor, how to make an appointment, how to talk to someone at a store or restaurant, and more. My experience includes English instruction for groups or individuals. I have a strong business background, so I am also able to help my students who want to improve their business English skills at work. My expertise is in creating lessons that are both fun and active while providing lots of English practice.

I received my first ESL Certificate from Biola University in California. I learned under many wonderful Master Teachers while I was there. I have received further training through ProLiteracy America, and attend many ESL workshops so that I can continue learning how to best teach my students. I have a Master's Degree in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from Azusa Pacific University. I am also a member of a global organization of ESL and EFL professionals.

General Computer

I have taught several classes and tutored several students on the use of general computers. I have even created a series of 10 lesson plans to be used to teach beginners everything from how to turn on and off a computer to how to use Windows applications (Word, Excel, etc), how to surf the internet, how to use computers to learn English, how to use email, and all about social networking (YouTube, Facebook, etc). My classes generally cover the following over a period of several weeks to months:

Beginner Basics: Learners study how to turn on and off a computer in the proper way. They learn the basics of computer vocabulary, security and safety, working with Windows, how to use a mouse, the basics of using a web browser to search the internet and find information.

Email and the Internet: Learners study how to create and use an email account. How to organize their email, and how to use email securely and safely. Learners also practice using search engines to find information on the internet, and then share the information with other people using email. The goal is to build your confidence and skills.

Microsoft: Learners study the basics of using both Word and Excel. We learn to how to create, correct, and format documents. How to use spell check, as well as how to save and print, is also covered. In Excel, we learn how to create and manipulate a spreadsheet. We also learn how to create simple formulas and calculations. Lastly, PowerPoint can also be covered if the learner wishes. In the PowerPoint review, we learn how to create fun and interesting presentations, how to add pictures and motion, and then how to change documents if needed.
