***NOW ACCEPTING STUDENTS FOR SUMMER, 2013!***
I am a certified, master's level special education teacher with a prior career in child and family therapy/adolescent therapy. I prefer working primarily with middle/high school aged students, but, as the mother of an eight year-old, I am happy to work with elementary students as well. My teaching experience includes working with students with learning disabilities in all content areas, and I have co-taught English, Geometry, and Science classes at the high school level.
My areas of interest include literacy development and improving reading skills in students with mild to moderate disabilities. I currently teach reading to students performing below grade level at the middle and high school levels, and have practiced implementing a variety of reading strategies to help bolster literacy skills. I also enjoy supporting student learning in geometry and algebra I.
I consider myself to be a culturally competent teacher, and have worked with students from diverse economic, social and cultural backgrounds. My educational philosophy is that each child has a unique learning style, and that students learn best when they are engaged and invested in the learning process. To this end, I strive to make lessons meaningful, relevant, engaging and creative.
