Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I got a 31 on the ACT's math section when I took it in high school. I have been tutoring this for the past 3 years and have helped all 10 students to improve their score over this period of time.

ACT Science

I scored a 28 on the science portion when I took ACT in high school. Most of the problems are word problems; I help to provide development of the critical thinking component of these problems. I help students to break down graphs, tables, and problems to understand what is being said and done in an experiment to teach the student the concepts that they need to answer a problem.

Algebra 1

I've tutored college and high school algebra for the past 4 years. I know the concepts very well and can provide a comprehensive study plan to get you back on track.

Algebra 2

I've tutored college algebra and precalc for the past 4 years, and I am fully qualified to teach high school as well as advanced algebra in college. I help breakdown higher concepts into their basic components to relate to previous material covered.

Anatomy

Anatomy is my area of expertise. I received an A in anatomy and physiology. I have tutored or been the supplemental instructor for anatomy and physiology over the past 5 years and know the material very well.

I also took anatomical kinesiology, which is a cadaver class, and I know many of the different structures within the human body. Scored 100% on both of the lab practicals, which covered muscles and bones.

ASVAB

Scored a 96 when I took it 6 years ago after high school.

Biochemistry

I am the only biochemistry tutor at UW-Milwuakee. I can help you to understand the complex topics that build off of general and organic chem while bringing a biological component in.

Biology

I have been tutoring biology since high school (8 years ago). I know all of the material very well, except naming of animals and plants (but that is more a memorization thing). I know both general biology as well as advanced biology concepts. I am especially good at cells, genetics, and microbiology (my undergrad). I teach the concepts in basic steps so that they are easy and fun to understand.

Chemistry

I have tutored general chemistry (100, 102, and 104) for the past 5 years at UW-Milwaukee. I was the supplemental instructor for the past 2 years. I created my own lesson plan to help students succeed in understanding the material better. General chemistry has become my strength and I understand all the concepts very well as I have tutored it extensively.

Cooking

I qualified through the military as a cook. I have been a successful cook for several years. I currently just focus on my own health and nutrition in cooking. I also took several cooking classes at the college level.

Ecology

I tutor all the biology courses at UW-Milwaukee.

Fitness

I was in the military for 6 years. I ran cross country and track for 10 years. I've taken several fitness, exercise and nutrition classes. I took a personal trainer certification course, but need to be re-certified.

I ran UW-Milwaukee track and cross country runner for 4 years. My personal best times are 8:40 in the 3k; 15:07 for the 5k; 25:43 for the 8k (cross country) and 32:07 (track), 33:43 (cross country) for 10k.

Since college, I have run the 1/2 marathon in 1:13 and 2:35 in my first full marathon.

I can set up a training plan for both beginners and also more advanced runners in any distance.

I am currently getting my masters in public health with a designation in nutrition, so I can also prescribe food plans and assess energy and food demands.

I have a reduced fee for this specialty. I will even accompany you on your runs if you need a training partner and/or an extra motivator.

Genetics

I am the only genetics tutor available at UW-Milwaukee. I have been tutoring this subject for over 4 years and know the material very well.

Geometry

Tested out of math in college. Qualified to tutor all lower level college math courses.

MCAT

Took the MCAT in June. Know the material very well as well as study plans to succeed. A huge discount to a Kaplan course or Princeton course. I'm currently in grad school at UW-Milwaukee for public health.

Microbiology

My undergrad degree was in Microbiology from UW-Milwaukee. I know all the microscopic information on an intracellular level as well as intercellular. I am especially good at genetics, cells and cell theory, bacteria and other prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and plant vs animal cell structures.

I was also the TA for microbiology and know the labs very well. I took several microbiology courses specifically in bacteria and other prokaryotes.

Nutrition

I've taken several nutrition courses and have a great deal of knowledge from outside reading that I've done to become more knowledgeable in the field of nutrition for my family as well as myself.

Organic Chemistry

Organic chemistry is specifically difficult because it is brute memorization as well as understanding the types of reactions and mechanisms that you need to know. I can help you to learn why things happen on a mechanism and reaction level. A basic understanding of general chemistry is also important since the concepts build off of what is learned at that level pertaining to lewis dot structure, hybridization, and electrophile and nucleophile.

I took organic chemistry 1 and 2 at the college level, as well as biochemistry. I know the material very well after tutoring it for the past 4 years at UW-Milwaukee. I have a great deal of knowledge from what I learned and then further have reviewed through tutoring as well as knowing the material for the MCAT. I am 1 of the 2 tutors qualified at UWM to tutor organic chem, with over 10 hours per week devoted to organic chemistry.

Physical Science

Got an 11 on physical science section of MCAT.

Physiology

I've been tutoring anatomy and physiology for the past 3 years.

Praxis

I am the math and science Praxis tutor at UW-Milwaukee. I know the material very well and can teach the concepts in many different ways to accommodate for different learning styles.

Prealgebra

I'm qualified to tutor all lower level college math courses as well as high school and middle school.

SAT Math

I'm qualified to tutor all lower level college math courses as well as prep math for SAT and ACT.

Track & Field

I was a UW-Milwaukee track and cross country runner for 4 years.

Trigonometry

I'm qualified to tutor all lower level college as well as high school math courses. I got an A in college trig. I've been tutoring it for the past 4 years.

Great understanding of the material — Thomas met with my son for the first time to tutor biology. He was very knowledgeable about the subject matter. My son felt very comfortable with him. He was professional, courteous and taught my son the concepts in a manner that was best suited to his needs. My son is a visual learner and Thomas was able to review the materials using a white board. He would constantly ask if my son understood t ...
