In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am qualified to teach children with the diagnosis of ADD and ADHD because I have an extensive background in Special Education.
My undergrad degree is in Educational Psychology with a minor in Special Education. I am a licensed certified WI teacher in the area of Cognitive Disabilities from grades K5 through Secondary. I have over 40 years of experience teaching and motivating students of all ages. I have been involved in cross-categorical education for many many years. I was fortunate to have a daughter diagnosed with ADD and advocated for her accommodations and education through high school. I am a Parent Volunteer Leader for WI FACETS, an organization that helps parents understand the special education maze and how to best get what their children need to be successful students. I have worked with many students with ADD/ADHD in my career. I am a parent of an ADD/ADHD child and know first hand the trials and tribulations parenting a child with this disability. I am very well aware of the characteristics and the kinds of supports that can help these students be successful. Statistics show that many of these young people end up unemployed, in jail, on drugs or alcohol. This is a statistic I try to help not to proliferate by educating their families, their teachers, and themselves on their greatness. As St. Francis of Assisi said,"All children can learn if we learn how to teach them."
I am WI licensed certified to teach grades K-12 in special education. A BA in Educational Psychology, MA in Learning Disabilities, and over 35 years of experience teaching and motivating students of all ages has provided me with the necessary tools needed to look at a concept or skill and break it down into teachable units. My training and experience has afforded me the ability to examine where a student is at the onset of tutoring and where he needs to go, and create and implement a customized plan to to help the student get there.

WI Licensed Certified to teach grades K-12 in special education and with over 35 years of teaching and motivating students of all ages has provided a solid background in study skills for all students. Students need to learn how to learn and have been rarely introduced to the various study skills techniques. My undergraduate degree is in Educational Psychology. I have a Master's in Learning Disabilities. This training and the wealth of experiences has afforded me numerous opportunities to customize an individual tutor plan for study skills.
A study skills inventory is done to see the areas of strength and weakness. A high performance person's schedule is done to have a birds eye view of the client's complete schedule for an average week. Various other informal assessments are done to get a baseline to work from. Then a customized study skills help plan is made to include one or more of the following:
Test taking skills
Reading Comprehension Strategies
Time Management Skills
The study skill areas are infused in one or more of the subject areas that may need remediation for a better bang for the buck. Many resources are used in conjunction with the study skills help. Study Strategies Made Easy, SOAR, the Master Student, Learning to Learn and many more may be used to support study skills help.
I am Wisconsin Licensed Certified to teach special education from K to 12. My undergrad degree is in Educational Psychology and my graduate degree is in Learning Disabilities. The training and the experience I have had for over 35 years of teaching and motivating students of all ages has been extremely helpful in my ability to look at a task and break it down into teachable units. In order to build a tutoring plan, it is important to get a sense of where the student is functioning in the beginning. Several informal assessments are done to achieve this. These informal assessments can be one or more of the following: silent and oral reading comprehension, learning modality, study skills inventory, etc. Then a diagnostic TEAS is taken for each part of the TEAS (reading, mathematics, science, English and language usage). The diagnostics generally point out the areas of weakness. The results are then discussed with the client to determine if the problems were due to carelessness or due to a lack of understanding of a particular skill or concept. I have a wealth of resources to supplement the instruction of any concept or skill needed to succeed on the TEAS. A customized tutoring plan is then created along with a timeline to project how much time may be needed to brush up for this test. A lot depends on the age of the client and the number of years the client has been out of school. Generally it turns out to be a refresher, but sometimes clients come in with gaps in the subject areas. These gaps must be addressed and could lengthen the preparation time.
