Elementary (K-6th)

Most of my career encompassed teaching K5-6th grade students. I taught about four years at the Middle School level too. My passion is for the elementary student who is a sponge for learning new concepts. My goal is to make each student a life-long learner who is enthusiastic about gaining new information and applying that information to his/her own life.

Phonics

Teaching of phonics skills is imperative in a holistic approach to reading. Through my thirty five years of teaching, I have frequently encorporated phonic lessons into the curriculum for accurate reading and spelling. I have many learning tools and games to make learning phonics fun and practical.

Study Skills

As both an educator and a tutor, study skills are critical to learning for all students. I incorporate study skills throughout my teaching within the classroom and within my tutoring sessions. It is vital to teach students how to organize materials, memorize facts, and to generalize information in order to pass tests and use the information for life skills.

Special Needs

My BS degree is for Exceptional Education with a Psychology minor. Then my MS degree is for Learning Disabilities. In addition, I have taken many courses beyond my MS in educational development for students with special needs. Finally, I was a Case Manager for six years and have expertise in IEP Management.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with ADD/ADHD students for thirty five years and understand their unique skills and needs. My educational background is founded in good research and practical experience. My tutoring style keeps the student engaged in many types of learning activities to help promote generalization of skills.

Social Studies

This subject takes a good eye for detail and patience to make the ideas come to life. I have experience both in the classroom and as a tutor with this area of the curriculum. History is so linked to our present and that makes this area of study an exciting one to teach.

Nutrition

As a Diabetic, I have to maintain appropriate nutrition to control my blood sugar. My entire family has this condition and I am considered the nutritional expert to keep all of us on the appropriate path. I am well read and worked with a Diabetic Nurse to understand the connection between nutrition and good health.
