My background spans Mathematics to Philosophy to Law (B.A., M.S., J.D.), but I talk in a straightforward, down-to-earth manner. I believe most material can be communicated in everyday language and illustrated with real-life examples. This is especially true in math.
My teaching philosophy emphasizes the adage "teach a man to fish." One of the goals of each lesson is to show you how much you already know and how to build from there to mastery of the subject. I have taught English as a foreign language both in class and in the home, and tutored mathematics to high school students in Spanish. Recently, I tutored and mentored at a high school in Seattle, where I was amazed what students from disadvantaged neighborhoods can do with some respect and encouragement.
I approach mathematics like language, foreign language like music, and writing like sport, and I adapt to the student's personality and learning style. My ultimate goal is to help a student take charge of his or her own learning while being a mentor and coach along the way.
I grew up speaking Egyptian dialect at home and have studied the language in grade school and in college. At the University of Wisconsin I took three advanced and intermediate courses, and currently I do research in politics in the Arabic language.
I have been the chess coach at Evergreen High School for the last two years. I have played tournament chess at a B level.
Between January 2000 and December 2001, I taught a course called Contemporary Applications of Modern Mathematics for four semesters at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. The course covered Graph Theory, Voting Methods, Apportionment, The Traveling Salesman Problem, and Descriptive Statistics.
I planned, taught, and graded this class for two sections each semester, with around 25 students in each class.
Thank you Ahmed for helping me not only survive, but thrive in my economics courses — You would be amazed how difficult it is to find a great economics tutor. It is a subject that is, in my opinion, difficult to explain, and, since it is not an exact science, there are few out there who are consistently able to provide answers on a wide range of material. Fortunately, Ahmed had both mastery of the subject and was able to explain it in an easy to understand manner. I credit Ahmed wi ...
