Hello! I am a mother of 6 and I have been a teacher for the past eleven years. Through my experience as a parent and as a teacher, I see the vast differences in student learning styles. While some are very visual learners, others are more auditory or tactile. I believe that all students learn differently, and I work tirelessly to develop lessons that provide that kind of individualization for each student. I am experienced at all elementary levels in all subject areas, as well as in ESL for children and ESOL/TOEFL for adult learners. I am also very comfortable and experienced with students who have IEP's and 504 plans and I have worked closely with the special needs teachers at my school to find superior ways to support these students. I have taught ESL and I have worked with students and adults from many different backgrounds and cultures. I believe in building strong foundations, which are often missing due to the pace and expectations of today's public school environment. I also believe in "gap filling" because sometimes all a student needs is more specific practice to allow for understanding and growth. Tutoring, then, can be continuous support, or can be relatively short-term, depending on the the students' needs and goals. I am well-versed in current technology, and believe in the benefits of apps and games as ways to practice and support skill building. While phonics is taught primarily at the lower elementary levels in the school classroom, I have found that using phonics strategies can significantly improve reading and spelling regardless of a student's age. I have been a teacher for the past 12 years and I have taught phonics-based reading, even with the advent of "guided reading" and other styles that have come and gone. All students need to understand and "hear" letter sounds in order for them to sound out longer words they encounter as texts increase in difficulty.

Even at early grade levels, teachers are required by the state, and now Common Core, standards to provide opportunities for students to practice public speaking through the presentation of projects, speeches, and shared research. It has been recognized that Public Speaking holds great importance in terms of success later in life, both in employment opportunities and social situations. For these reasons, Public Speaking has been part of my curriculum for as long as I can remember and I have become fluent at teaching it.
