Susan has a broad classical education with a great deal of music experience. She received her professional education in the University of Oregon's School of Music, where she specialized in Opera Performance and Languages, and General Humanities (History, Philosophy, and English). She studied in the Music Conservatory of Perugia, Italy, and performed with Eugene Opera Company and the Oregon Symphony. She is a Certified Singing Vocal Specialist. Susan also has experience as a Music Librarian, specializing in music manuscripts, recordings, indexes and scores.

Private Voice Lessons with Susan are available, one-on-one, in solid classical singing technique. This will train you to sing Opera arias, but also Broadway songs, Rock & Roll, Jazz, etc. Vocal Training is also available for College Preparation, Actors, Audition Preparation, Corporate/Public Speaking, and ESL practice. All ages are welcome to inquire. Susan is also qualified to tutor in English Reading, Grammar, and Composition.

Susan believes in a holistic physical approach to singing and performing. Your body is your instrument and the muscles must be built. Whole body exercise is essential to building stamina and being a singer, and Susan can direct your development. With increasing strength and deep breathing, a singer can relax, and the sound will carry. There will be no need to strain or "belt it out" with proper preparation and technique, and you will be heard in the back row! It is also ideal to understand the words and their meanings in each phrase of the music or selection. Susan can help you interpret songs or audition pieces in a variety of languages. You will learn the natural pacing of each song and explore the meaning and emotional effect you can express!

Each voice is unique. Let's work together to find music which is uniquely suited to your voice!

Ear Training

I studied at the University of Oregon School of Music as a singer, and have sung in various choirs and opera performances for years. I also play the violin, and have developed my inner ear by practice and tuning the violin, my voice, and other string instruments. With practice, a sense of relative pitch can be developed, especially in a group, with other musicians. In private lessons, I've found, a good technique is to reproduce piano pitches from memory. Another is to try and tune stringed instruments by ear, and relative harmonies.

General Music

I studied at the School of Music at the University of Oregon, and also at the Conservatory of Music in Perugia, Italy. I can sight read music, and have sung with various choirs for many years. I can play the piano somewhat, but really specialize in Voice Performance. I also sang with the Eugene Opera company and the Oregon Symphony Choir. I directed a children's choir.

Music History

I studied Music History as part of my course requirements at the Music School at the University of Oregon, where I majored in Voice Performance. I performed in several Operas, with several choirs, and with the Oregon Symphony. I have read widely in music history, and understand something of its place in politics, literature, and religion. I also understand a good deal about performance techniques and requirements of music from various centuries and eras.

Phonics

I am a musician and a librarian, and am qualified to tutor in phonics and English grammar. I have experience teaching voice and public speaking from several years' working in the corporate world. I also tutor students in ESL. As a voice teacher, I teach vowel sounds and diction at every lesson.

I have degrees in Voice Performance and General Humanities from the University of Oregon and the University of Chicago. I studied Italian and French diction and phonics, and I am very good at English grammar. I currently have several students to whom I teach phonics and speech level singing. I also tutor students in speaking English.

Sight Singing

I learned to sightread music as a child, and have found it useful ever since. I have many years' experience singing in choirs, which has developed my skill in reading the sheet music quickly and without thought. I also worked as a Music Librarian, and can recognize music pieces by melody and chord structure. I think Solfege is not an ideal teaching technique, because it relies on conscious thought and translation within one's mind, which slows down the process. Much easier and better is just to feel the music, hear the chord progressions, and try to anticipate where the notes will land from moment to moment. Once the student becomes familiar with the Grand Staff, and some key signatures, it is easier to follow the directions the notes take.

Voice (Music)

I studied Voice Performance at the University of Oregon School of Music, where I specialized in Opera Performance and Languages. I studied History of Performance Techniques, Acting, Italian and French Diction, and Music Theory. I also studied in the Music Conservatory of Perugia, Italy, and performed with Eugene Opera! Company and the Oregon Symphony. I am a Certified Singing Vocal Specialist. I also have experience as a Music Librarian, specializing in music manuscripts, recordings, indexes and scores. I can choose music based upon specific vocal types, and I teach solid classical technique.
