Elementary (K-6th)

Since 1997, I have helped students on an individual basis or in small groups. I have selected educational content based on abilities, learning styles and goals for students and developed and implemented differentiated lessons that meet varied student needs. I have created curriculum tailored to the individual student 's need that engages and challenges. I use teaching techniques to meet the needs of visual, kinesthetic and auditory learners for all subject areas. I specialize in phonics instruction and initial reading to develop reading fluency, comprehension and literacy.

Since 2000, my classroom work has included: developing and teaching a middle school writing course, co-facilitating a Great Books Discussion Group for ages 8-12, developing guidelines, goals, and supervising a science fair program for middle school, Conducting an art appreciation class exploring religious symbolism for ages 6 and up, facilitating and leading a middle school/high school book discussion on C.S. Lewis' The Screwtape Letters, and conducting a high school critical thinking course based upon U.S. Supreme Court decisions of cases dealing with the Bill of Rights utilizing source documents, classroom discovery, and discussion.

GED

I have experience educating through the 12th grade, including AP and honors classes. The GED tests basic skills as taught in high school, I believe I have the skills necessary to help a student prepare for the test.

I have taught phonics for over 15 years. I field tested and critiqued the kindergarten and first grade phonics books for Critical Thinking Press. I have used the Primary Phonics series and Explode the Code from Educators Publishing Service. In addition I have used Phonics Is Fun, Phonics and Word Study workbooks from Modern Curriculum Press. I also have some phonics training using the Montessori method. On a personal note, i have taught all 8 of my children to read using phonics.

Public Speaking

In high school, I was on the debate team and won numerous speaker and team awards at regional tournaments. In my senior year, I was selected as one of the top 12 debaters in Illinois, which resulted in my qualification for the national tournament held at Harvard.

I have performed in many stage productions. I have received drama and improvisation training. I was a member of Player's Workshop and Second City's Children's Theater in Chicago and a member of an amateur improvisation group.

I also have 20+ years of corporate training, sales presentations and workshops in the IT field.

At educational conferences, I have given workshops to other educators on many topics.
