UW-Whitewater; Whitewater, WI (Math and German)
I have been a math teacher for 25 years, having taught first at the middle school level for five years years then the last 20 have been at the high school level.
I have been teaching mainly Algebra 2/Trigonometry, CP Geometry, Statistics and Algebra, and I would definitely be able to help with your practice for the ACT Math Exam.
I have also tutored Pre-Calculus recently, as well, and would be willing to help you out in Pre-Calc. in a pinch.
My educational background is highlighted with a major in Math Education, but includes a minor in German, which I would be willing to tutor as well. I have a certification to teach German and had a wonderful opportunity to teach German for one semester. I have kept up with the German language as best I could through my many travels to Germany and taking an intensive language class one summer in Germany. I have a passion for the German language and keep up with the language through self-study and occasionally participating in a German conversation class.
I look forward to being able to help you out with your Math or German.
To add a bit about me, I have been married for five years now. My wife and I have a son who is almost three years old, and we are in the adoption process at the moment to add a second child to our family. I have been a math teacher for 25 years, having taught first at the middle school level for five years years then the last 20 have been at the high school level.
I have been teaching mainly Algebra 2/ Read more
Alan is an excellent Math tutor. He is tutoring my son in Geometry Honors(high school). We have just finished our second session, and are very satisfied with his knowledge and teaching methods. Alan is highly motivated to teach my son to understand and master the concepts and formulas associated with Geometry. My son appreciates his kindness, patience, and "little test taking tips" he receives from Alan. He is also giving him some pointers for his ACTs next year. He responds promptly to e-mails and phone calls also. Alan is flexible to work with my son's schedule, and to provide extra practice time for upcoming exams. The feedback he provides post sessions help me see my son's progress and what he still needs to practice.
The lessons are interesting and aimed at my particular needs. He is prompt and shows his enthusiasm for the German language and culture.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have taught Math for 25 years now(20 at the High School level), so I have many years' experience teaching Algebra 1, CP Geometry, CP Algebra 2/Trig and Statistics.
I would be able to review with you many different skills covered with the Algebra, Geometry and Trig subjects that would be good prospective problems for an ACT exam.
One thing that I know has helped students in my classes, I use some nice little charts for the trig ratios that help students remember the special right triangle relationships.
I have taught High School math for 20 years now, and have a solid background of CP Geometry (having taught that for 20 years) which prepared me well for teaching Algebra 2/Trig.
I have taught Alg 2/ Trig for 3 years now and am just finishing up teaching two sections of Alg 2/Trig this year. This would help in tutoring as I would have it fresh in my mind.
My German background started in high school when my grandparents spoke German around me and I wanted to understand what they were saying. I took German for 3 years in high school, and enjoyed it so much that I continued in college and used German for my minor to go along with my business degree at the time, and then with my math degree three years later.
I have been able to travel extensively around Germany and in German-speaking countries on 8 different trips that I took to Europe over the last 25 years. I was keeping up with the language to give myself the background and qualifications to teach it should I be given the chance, which actually happened back in 2002. I was given the chance to teach German for the Spring semester in 2002. I have tried to keep up with the language by taking conversational German classes over the years, or by doing some reading. I enjoy the German language and culture and would be excited to help you learn some German.
Although I have been teaching high school math for 20 of the last 25 years, my first five years of teaching were at the middle school level. Also, I have taught Prealgebra at the high school level for the last four years.
Additionally, for the last two years I have taught Prealgebra privately as a refresher to a student as well as subject reinforcement during the school year.
I would work with your daughter to see what topics would need to be stressed, and work in some repetition of computations and formulas that would apply. I would try to find some good application problems that would help reinforce the topics as well.
