I've been a math tutor for some years now, having started out as a peer tutor at the walk-in tutoring center at Milwaukee Area Tech South Campus. A mother called the center looking for an algebra tutor for her high school daughter, and I decided I was up for the job. This turned out to be a very positive experience for me, and as a result I decided to pursue private tutoring further.
Since then I've had the pleasure of working with several students in the private sector, mostly in high school with the occasional middle or elementary school student, and have been very successful in these assignments. I also currently work as a tutor at St. Norbert College, certified at level one by the College Reading and Learning Association.
Administrative Details:
TRANSPORTATION
I live at St. Norbert during the academic year, and generally speaking I prefer to work there rather than travel to a student's house. The principal reason is that I do not own a car. This does not bar me from traveling by other means, and if you would like me to visit your house to tutor, I will if circumstances permit. That having been said though, I think that studying outside the home usually has a positive effect on the student's ability to concentrate, and I do offer a $5 per hour discount if students can travel.
FOR MILWAUKEE STUDENTS
I'm available to tutor during breaks, and my transportation circumstances in those situations improve. Transportation in this case should not be an issue.
GROUP TUTORING - groups of two
I do have experience group tutoring and offer a group tutoring rate of $60 per hour, 1.5 times my usual rate. I've found that for groups to work well the students need to be working on the same subject for the same class and be roughly at the same level of ability, and it helps if they get along well with each other to begin with. With all these factors in place, group tutoring can be a very rewarding experience for the students. On the other hand, if the students have a wider gap in ability or do not connect well with each other, individual tutoring is almost certainly better.
CANCELLATION POLICY
Students are expected to notify me by phone or email of any cancellation or reschedule of an appointment at least six hours before the appointment. Students are charged $20 for appointments that are cancelled within six hours of the appointment. This goes up to $30 within the last hour before the appointment. Students are charged $40 for appointments that are not cancelled.
