I am a Washington state certified teacher, with teaching endorsements in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Special Education, and Visual Arts. I have 29 years of teaching experience in elementary and junior high settings. It is my belief that students need to experience success, especially in tasks that challenge them, so that they can gain confidence in themselves as learners. It is my job to guide them to this success.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have an elementary education endorsement and 29 years of experience teaching at the elementary level. I have taught all subjects at the elementary level, including science and social studies.

Phonics

Phonics is the matching of letters and letter sounds to read words. It can help students to decode words and make sense of what they read. I have used many different phonics programs ans so can match students to the programs that will work best for them. I have 29 years of experience teaching, including time as a reading specialist.

Study Skills

Many students have difficulty in school because of a lack of study skills, including things like organization and the ability to recognize what is important to know. As a teacher for 29 years, I have worked with many students to improve their study skills and ability to learn what they need to learn to meet their academic goals and improve their self-confidence.

Special Needs

I have a special education endorsement from Washington state on my teaching certificate so I have training in dealing with special needs, including physical disabilities as well as learning disabilities. I also have experience as a special education teacher so I have taught students with a variety of disabilities. Each student is unique, and I have to be ready to adjust lessons to take advantage of my student's strengths.

Drawing

I have been a practicing artist for almost 40 years. I have a BFA degree in art, as well as a Washington state teaching endorsement in Visual Arts. I completed a school art program at the University of South Carolina that led to my endorsement. Painting

Painting is mainly a way of seeing and reproducing what you see. I have a BFA in art, and have completed courses at the University of South Carolina in the school art program which has allowed me to obtain a visual arts endorsement on my Washington state teaching certification. So I have a combination of training and experience in this area. Painting includes not just perspective and shading, but also using color to set moods and communicate feelings.

ADD/ADHD

These letters stand for Attention Deficit Disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. These students have difficulty being still and focusing on a sbject for a period of time. Therefore teaching these students means using techniques which can use their strengths to help their weaknesses. Aspergers

Asperger's is on the autism spectrum and is marked by social and communication difficulties. I have a special education endorsement and am currently teaching a self-contained special education class including Asperger's students. I have aslo had experience in my career previously with Asperger's students. My training and experience have allowed me to learn ways to help Asperger's students learn.

Autism

Autism spectrum is marked by social and communication difficulties. I have a special education endorsement and am currently teaching a self-contained special education class including autistic students. I have also had experience in my career previously with autistic students. My training and experience have allowed me to learn ways to help autistic students learn academic and social skills.

Dyslexia

Dyslexia is an inability to read as well as IQ would suggest. These students are often bright, and quickly become discouraged as they realize they are not reading as well as they feel they should. Therefore it is necessary to not only address the academic difficulties but also the self-confidence issues. I have 29 years of teaching experience including some time as a reading specialist. I also have special education endorsement as well as special education experience.
