As a former college writing center consultant, I understand what it is to be both the student and the tutor (and how unnerving it can be to share your work, even on days when your self-esteem is fairly intact). My technique is one that offers respect to the student and the student's work and goals. I prefer to use a Socratic approach by asking the student questions and helping him/her think through the obstacles, rather than simply giving answers. After using this method for over four years, I have found it not only empowers the student to take responsibility as a learner but also to develop problem-solving skills, thus requiring less help from a tutor.
My personal research habits, education, and employment history have given me a wealth of experience in various subjects and have made me a well-rounded and thorough tutor. I am eager to hear from you so we can get started!
My experience includes working as a college-level writing consultant, assisting freshmen through graduate level students with essay assignments, creative writing homework, PowerPoint presentations, and out-of-class writing projects. I have enjoyed working with bilingual and ESL/NNS students, nontraditional students, and students with learning and/or physical disabilities.
I have also worked as an SES Tutor and private tutor (K-12), and taught students reading and language skills using various methods, including modeling pace and pronunciation in speech and reading, playing word and language games, singing songs, and more. I regularly collaborated with students, parents, teachers, and supervisors to determine student needs, develop tutoring plans, or assess student progress.
