A child, parents and tutor: a tutorial success team

I have worked with children in a number of settings for twenty five years. I taught elementary special education in California and middle school special education students in Seattle for three years. Most of my professional experience with children has been as a family therapist. I worked as a tutor for children of military families for two years in the United States, Europe and Korea. I have a calming influence on children who are anxious about interacting with new people, or have fears associated with school work. I work mostly with basic reading and math skills. My goal for the first few sessions is to determine a child's level of functioning and build from there. Communication with parents about a child's learning history and any ideas as to why there is difficulty learning is an essential part of the the process. I encourage questions from parents at any time and enjoy 'coaching' parents in ways they might be more effective in helping a child experience success in school. I welcome questions prior to the first session if that will help you decide whether I am the best match for you and your child.

Elementary (K-6th)

Phonics

In California, I taught a class of children with language disorders. I developed a system of teaching reading and writing on a very basic level using phonics. I had several students who could both read and write words and sentences by 'sounding' the words out.

Special Needs

I have worked extensively with children with behavior problems. That was the greatest part of my practice as a family therapist for twenty years. I have also worked with children and families where the child had severe physical disorder such as spinal bifida.

ADD/ADHD

I have worked with children with attentional disorders, including AD/HD for ten years. I have a basic understanding of the neurology of impaired attention. I have coached both parents and children in improving the child's ability to attend.
