Hello! I'm a tutor who is new to WyzAnt, but who has helped young people of various ages with their math and social studies homework over the years. I'm looking forward to helping a lot more people to maximize their potential.

A lot of students hear about their potential. I understand this because I grew up being told about mine, and how I needed to work to maximize it. It took me a long time to figure out how, but by the time I finished my master's at New York University, I was making the deans list and receiving academic honors. Along the way, I took the SAT and GRE, and scored in the upper 90s in terms of percentile in the SAT math, SAT verbal, GRE writing, GRE reading and GRE math. (I took the SAT prior to the writing being added.)

My degrees are in economics and political science, and in international affairs at the masters level. I have an interest in history, and did well at social studies throughout my K-12 education. In school I got an A in math classes, in particular pre-algebra, algebra and geometry, and competed in math competitions. Finally, I'm also able to tutor aspiring drummers (on drum sets), as I played drums in school bands and, starting in high school, played drums in local bands before I moved to New York.

I am not going to treat students like they're kids. If you're looking for a strict, hierarchical type, I'm not it. I treat people like they're people, and try and help them understand things. I'm professional, even-keeled, and friendly. I'm looking forward to meeting and working with people in the future, and hope to hear from you soon.

Algebra 1

I took algebra 1 in middle school and received an A throughout the year. Additionally, I've used algebra in a variety of settings for other subjects as well as math through my collegiate study. I am very comfortable with the subject and would be happy to assist anyone with learning it.

Drums

I learned to play the drums beginning in 1996 with marching band lessons. In 1997 I bought a drum set and began teaching myself to play and then took a year of lessons starting in late 1997 on the drum set. I played casually for another two years, and then beginning in 1999 I began playing with local bands in the Portland, Oregon area. In 2002, one of my bands won a city-wide Battle of the Bands at the Paris Theatre. I have continued playing locally, though I am now recording less frequently after beginning college in 2003.

Microsoft Excel

I have used Microsoft Excel since Windows 3.1 was the dominant operating system, as it was required for us to learn Excel (and Word) in middle school in the mid-90s just before Windows 95 was widely adopted. I currently use Office 2013, so I am proficient in the three latest versions of Excel as well (including the most up-to-date version released). I use Excel regularly for jobs, for tracking things like WyzAnt tutoring, budgets, etc. as well as for school up to and including graduate school, and I would be happy to assist in most types of uses of Excel as well.

Public Speaking

I have been teaching college students how to be better public speakers now for nearly ten years. As a student aide to a class my second year in college, I assisted a professor in working on speech development and debating skills. Later in college, I helped develop a Model UN program on my college campus, which I led. Through this and my subsequent work for nonprofits in the region, I have helped develop programs that challenge students to communicate better in large group speeches, small group speeches, small group communication and one-on-one negotiation.
