I graduated from Central Washington State College in 1971. I am certified by the State of Washington to teach K-8 in all subjects.
I was hired by the White Pass School Dist. in Washington State and taught from Sept. 1971 to June 1984. I was then hired by the Vancouver School District in Vancouver, WA and taught from Sept. 1985 to June 2006. All of my teaching was done in grades from first to sixth.
Finally, I have also worked as an ELL Program Certified Teacher and Volunteer Coordinator.
I have had extensive training and on the job experience with teaching elementary math skills and concepts.
The types of approaches that I use with math instruction include hands on by manipulating objects to grasp regrouping skills. Another approach is the automaticity of memory recall. This a a quick drill of addition, subtraction, multiplication and division facts. With a quick recall of facts, students are always behind by trying to figure out the simpler answers.
Another approach is lots of work with multi-step math problems and helping students understand what they need to know to answer the problem.
What I enjoy most about teaching math to younger students, is the teaching of math patterns. Math is based on many different types of patterns and students can increase their scores by applying the concepts that are found in a variety of patterns.
I have enjoyed working with students in grades 1 through 5 as a classroom teacher and substitute teacher.
I enjoy teaching science and helping students understand the skills that they need to learn.
The students that I work with do especially well when they learn to write about the various experiments that they have done. Also, when doing their science projects, I enjoy helping students organize their materials.
I enjoy working with English Language Leaners because the are caring and want to improve their abibility to speak English.
I have worked with ESL students from Kindergarten to 5th grade. I have loved all the time spent with them.
After working with students whose native language is not English, I admire them and their families to make the huge sacriface to move to the United States. They work so hard to make their lives better.
As an elementary teacher, I have had extensive training with the teaching of phonics.
My training started while doing undergraduate work at Central Washington. The training and application of phonics instruction has been an important component of a successful reading program.
My style of teaching phonics is to help students with connecting the sounds that letters make individually and joined with other letters. I feel that I can be of assistance to students needing tutoring with phonics.
As an elementary teacher for over 30 years, I have had training in many approaches to teaching reading.
My personal favorite approach is to teach the sounds that letters make, chunking the sounds together and giving students some solid basics to succeed.
Many schools that I worked at use this model and the students become fluent readers by the time they get into 2nd and 3rd grade.
Another approach that I love to use is fast timings. One minute timings, encourage the students to develop a larger word vocabulary and accuracy of read words.
Last, is increased comprehension... the reason we read. Helping students understand what they had read and how to use the story to determine what is important about the story.
Sounds, fluency and comprehension... all necessary skills to be successful in reading.
I have training and experience working with students on IEP and 503 Plans. I understand the scope of the an IEP and accommodations required by both documents.
Students with special needs are given assignments that meet their individual needs and are monitored closely to progress and adjustments.
I am currently working in a Life Skills Developmental Skills classroom as a para educator. I work daily with students with various developmental needs. All lessons are individualized and targeted to their needs.
As an elementary teacher, it was essential to teach and reinforce students daily about the importance of study skills.
Organization and breaking down information are essential to good study skills. Also, understanding what the student is expected to complete, helps to define what the student needs to know to be successful.
For many students, there is a lack of being able to move through a problem or assignment due to poor organization and understanding the task.
I have many years of experience in teaching the writing process to students in grades 3 and 4. The genre of writing I am most practiced with is personal narrative, expository and descriptive narrative.
I would be happy to assist children with beginning writing skills and with older elementary students with addressing any writing problems.
