Hello!

I love to tutor students in math, physics and chemistry.

I have a lot of experience working as a tutor. As a grad student, I worked in the Physics Help Center helping students solve problems. Before that, I worked as a tutor for a year and a half with various companies. This gave me the opportunity to see what works best with students in terms of tutoring style.

The style I think works best is rather than flatly telling the student how to solve a problem, I give subtle hints that push the student, inch by inch, to solve the problem themselves. This is important so the student gains "muscle memory" in the brain as many problems are just slight variations of one big, main idea. Soon, that "mental pathway" becomes instinctual and formerly difficult problems become trivial. My goal is to challenge the student but not overly frustrate them.

As for myself, I graduated in May 2013 with my Master of Science in Physics from Montana State University. Rather than continuing on the long road to the PhD, I decided to move back to my hometown of Tacoma. In addition, I passed the PhD Qualifying Exam at the highest level on my first try (not to brag, just so you have confidence that I know what I'm doing).

I truly look forward to helping you or your academic acquaintance become a master in your/their chosen subject.

Trevor

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Linear Algebra

I just got my Master of Science in physics, and much of the math involved with higher level physics is linear algebra. Quantum mechanics is all about solving eigenvalue (linear algebra) problems. It would be impossible to succeed in physics without a solid grasp of it.
