I love to teach! I like to see students succeed and I like to make it fun for you. I use stories, drawings, music and games to help you learn. My lesson plans try to include using our 5 senses. For example, when my students in third grade were learning about literary genre, I read a poem I had written and they wrote their own. We marked the rhythm and beat of the poems with rhythm instruments to help them remember those important things. Younger kids enjoyed learning to read with expression and sometimes we acted out the stories they read. We worked on spelling rules by chanting things like "When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking". We had fun but most importantly, the children learned and their teachers remarked at their improvement.
I was a Pre-School teacher for 25 years and also did music and drama classes with children from Pre-School to Fifth grade. I retired a few years ago but worked for 7 years doing musical plays with Second graders. I have an AA degree with an emphasis in Early Childhood Education from Santa Barbara City College and attended San Jose State University for one year. I have been a tutor in Tacoma School District since January 2011. I have tutored over 20 children in grades K-5 in literacy. I have found tutoring to be a fulfilling experience for me and the children as well. I love to teach! I like to see students succeed and I like to make it fun for you. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I tutored children in grades K-5 for the past two years in literacy. K-2 worked on phonics, read books connected with the curriculum, wrote stories and had progress checks. Grades 3-5 learned to better understand cause and effect, genre, details and other literacy topics. They wrote stories and analyzed other written works.
I have worked with preschoolers whose native languages were Japanese and Spanish. I have had Belgian, Swiss and Japanese live-in exchange students. All spoke English but through our conversations were able to improve their ability to speak more smoothly and understand American idioms.
I have worked with K-5th grades and adults in learning and improving their reading skills. Last year I tutored 16 children
in reading and literacy. I employed activities such as chanting, games, acting and songs to help the kids learn spelling rules, understand word meanings and develop fluency.
I have been a writer for many years. I write primarily for children and have had some poems and stories published. I have also worked with students from Belgium, Switzerland and Japan to improve their English speaking and writing.
I have helped my own two sons with the writing of their college application essays.
