I owned and taught in my alternative school, Hope School in Tacoma, Washington, from the first year we were certified as a private school in 1986 until the school closed in 2010. Students from prekindergarten to high school were enrolled. Special needs students were mainstreamed. Class sizes were small with a maximum ratio of one teacher to twelve students, and emphasis was on a highly individualized educational program with equal focus on the emotional, social and physical growth needs of each student. In my tutoring effort, I used the Slingerland Reading Program, most specifically for dyslexic students. I am a registered tutor in this method at the Slingerland Institute in Bellevue, Washington having done my training through Seattle Pacific University. My success with this method convinced me of its value, and I continue to use elements of it in all of my tutoring work.

In my private school, ADD and ADHD students were mainstreamed successfully by assessing their individual needs. A learning atmosphere that was conducive to every student's right to an education was fostered by an appreciation of the need for student objectives in both content and language.
I have been trained in the Slingerland method which is used in many schools as the reading program. This was the method used in my private school for all of the grades. It is gratifying to participate in the progress of dyslexic students, such as those that I have tutored through WyzAnt.
My fully accredited private school met state standards in providing curriculum that allowed for success for all K-6th grade students. An enriching experience was offered through role-playing, scaffolding techniques, and peer group learning. Individualism was accentuated and appreciated.
Phonics is best mastered with the presentation of short vowel sounds, followed by long vowel sounds, with blends and consonant digraphs being offered upon mastery of the vowels. This method is supported by the Modern Curriculum Press Reading Series. I used this method for five years in kindergarten and all students were reading by January.
