Like many of you, I struggled in school. Not so much with the subjects themselves as with the way they were taught. I discovered early on that my lousy grades were not due to my inability to comprehend the subject matter or that I was any less "smart" than the rest of my class. I just learned differently and found the typical classroom structure unbelievably boring. It wasn't until I connected with a mentor that I truly discovered my passion for learning that has not diminished to this day.
The most important skill for any student is learning to think critically. And this is the foundation of my teaching methods. Critical thinking skills are essential to succeeding in today's world and is the very core of education. Unfortunately, few traditional classrooms instill this vital skill in their students today. Is it any wonder so many pupils are struggling?
My method of tutoring is comparatively different from most tutors. I don't simply explain subjects and clarify questions, but rather I inspire students to think critically and creatively, to ask the "why" questions and to put the subjects they are learning into a real-world perspective, expounding on how and why a subject will be useful in their lives. Moreover, I try to inspire a lifelong passion for learning, the way I was inspired in my youth.
