English/ESL & Classical Liberal Arts Tutor

I have been working in the education field for the past six years. During that time I have held positions as an elementary and middle school English, Math, and Special Education teacher. I have worked abroad in countries within Asia and the Middle East as an ESL instructor at the college level. Currently, I work as an ESL instructor at Bates Technical College in Tacoma.

As a tutor, I very much enjoy the learning atmosphere created by being able to work one-on-one or in small groups with students. This dynamic allows each student to give more input and direction to individual study sessions that might not be possible in a large classroom setting. I like my students to think of me as an educational resource available to help them achieve their personal learning goals. As my student, I will listen to what your educational needs are, and then working together we will create a learning plan. Whether you have short-term or long-term goals, just need help preparing for an exam, or want to learn a whole new subject, as your tutor I will both encourage and help you develop a learning program that is a best fit for you.

ASVAB

I can help with preparing to take the ASVAB and related test taking strategies. As a former soldier, Army, I have taken the test myself and understand the pressure to do well. The higher your score, the more options you will have in choosing your MOS when you enlist.

Elementary (K-6th)

I spent last school year as a K - 8th tutor for both Tacoma and Clover Park School Districts. I worked in the Supplemental Education Services program helping children behind in math and reading. Typically my students were behind one to two grade levels in both or either area. I met with most students twice a week after school for an hour and a half. The tutoring took place on-site at the schools, and I often worked together with each child's teacher to best meet their educational needs.

Special Needs

My first teaching position was working with children who had special needs at the middle school level. I developed and wrote no less than 10 IEPs (Individual Education Plans) for students in the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade. I worked as an inclusion teacher. I have certification in teaching TEFL (ESL). I have successfully completed an 120 hour TEFL certification program with an addition 6 hours of observed classroom teaching. I can provide my certification upon request. I earned my certification while living in Thailand. I have taught ESL at both primary and high school levels in the past, and most recently at the college level.
