With more than 15 years of teaching experience, I understand today's learning styles. Helping students understand the big picture of their subject and understanding how they personally learn are the most effective principles to increase any student's success.

I have proven techniques that will increase student's retention and their confidence. With my help, students will increase their understanding of themselves as a learner rather than as seeing themselves as a pawn in the educational "game." I've taught in public school and in the private sector. I've managed classrooms, committees, and faculty. I know how to help your child get ahead.

My specifications are: Study skills, Learning styles, History, Language Arts, basic math and basic science.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I am currently attending Gonzaga University in Spokane WA in the Master's - LMHC/LMFT program. We are currently studying diagnosis and disabilities such as ADD/ADHD among others. Part of our practicum program is to see clients in a supervised setting and help them with their problems, many of which are ADD/ADHD which is becoming a specialty area of mine. I hold a BA in Teaching and a MA in Teaching and have 15 years of experience with children and adults with various learning disabilities.

American History

I have a BA in History Teaching from Brigham Young University (2000). I taught US History for 10 years in public and private schools from 2003 to 2012.

Basketball

I coached boys and girls basketball for 5 years at the Jr. High level. I understand and know who to effectively teach the fundamental skills and techniques of basketball to young athletes. I have played basketball in various situations and venues for the last 20 years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I taught middle school for 14 years in WA state in mostly history and English/language arts and some math; we did teach all subjects at one time or another, reading, science, etc. I have a Masters degree from CWU in Teaching and am pursuing a second in counseling from Gonzaga U. I feel that I am totally capable of helping elementary school aged children with all of their studies and organizational skills especially since I know what they will need to be prepared for in middle school.

Social Studies

I have my college degree in history teaching. I also have a masters degree in teaching. I understand how to learn and experience Social Studies.

Study Skills

I taught middle school for 10 years. Middle school students need various study skills in order to be successful. Knowing how to ask questions; making connections to the material; taking proper notes; making educated guesses and suppositions; etc.

Amazing with My Teen Son! — My son has had 4 lessons with Shawn and I am continually impressed. He has the ability to break things down so my son can understand them and my son actually enjoys the hour he spends with Shawn(and that's saying something when dealing with 15 year olds!). ...
