DeAnn is experienced in serving children of all ages with significant reading, spelling and writing difficulties, including children with dyslexia. Trained in multisensory phonics (specifically the scientifically based Alphabet Phonics curriculum), DeAnn can assist pre-school children through adults having difficulty with letters, sounds, and reading. She offers research paper coaching for high school students and organizational success strategies for challenged youth, as well as a multi-sensory math program for elementary students struggling with addition and subtraction.

Helping struggling children learn to read and write well aligns with DeAnn’s life-long love of reading and writing. Driven by this love, DeAnn earned a Bachelor of Science in Journalism from the University of Illinois-Urbana and a Master’s in Humanities-Literature from the University of California-Dominquez Hills. Her compassion to teach struggling learners grew from raising two sons with dyslexia, ADHD, and dysgraphia. This first-hand experience of how multisensory instruction can turn a child’s life around is what draws her to continue to seek students and assist them on their journey towards independent reading and writing.

DeAnn is a recently retired Air Force officer who values integrity, honesty, and a job well done!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have completed the Alphabet Phonics multisensory instruction program. It entailed over 120 classroom hours over the course of three years. Additionally, I have taken Reading Readiness to instruct preschool children and will soon take Wired for Reading. I have tutored dyslexic students for the past three years with these scientifically proven methods. Certificates available.

Phonics

The three-year training I took to learn Alphabet Phonics included multiple strategies to teach kids with many different disorders. Specifically, I have accommodations for dysgraphia and ADHD. In a Semple Math Course I learned a visual/auditory method to teach basic math facts to any child demonstrating difficulty with traditional methods. This includes songs and graphics. Finally, in Wired for Reading, I learned again specific strategies for working with students with dyslexia, dysgraphia, ADHD and other special needs.

Study Skills

As part of my dyslexia training, I went through several processes that would assist children with their study skills. One involves setting up a notebooks system with labeled and color coded tabs. It helps keep them organized daily and has a specific folder for incoming homework and work to be turned in.

Secondly, I have an editing process that helps assist kids in proofing their own papers. It has nine steps and is very systematic and once learned it helps keeps kids on track.

Lastly, I have a research paper writing segment that details how to create notecards and keep them organized (both online and physical note cards). This can be applied to regular study skills. It also teaches how to paraphrase.

When you combine these various strategies, I have a lot to offer students who have trouble keeping themselves organized.
