PROFESSIONALS, COLLEGE STUDENTS, HIGH SCHOOL, MIDDLE SCHOOL, EVERY ONE...As a former English teacher, educational business owner, and an aspiring author, I know that learning how to put your thoughts on paper or speaking in front of an audience in a clear, thoughtful and memorable way can be a nightmare. My goal is ultimately to help you to learn how to understand what it takes to use your skills and learning style to become not only a better writer and/or speaker but also a confident and self-assured one. We will discuss your needs and determine the best path to take with your endeavors. We can assess your skills and determine if you need to spend some time with grammar, content, voice, etc. I will help you find ways to create and develop ideas and topics. I also will suggest different methods for developing an writing piece or a speech depending upon your audience.

I have a B.S. in education and taught middle school language arts (reading incorporated into a writing-based curriculum) as well as high school English and public speaking. My Master's in an MA in English education, again with a writing focus. I've also directed school musicals and plays and began working on a PhD in process drama. As the owner/operator of a supplemental education business, I worked with students of all ages (six through 56 actually), and I am quite successful with listening and helping individuals realize their potential and ability. I am a proofreader/editor for educators studying to become master teachers as well. My background has prepared me to work one-on-one to enable others to be successful. I hope we can work together soon.

I look forward to helping you find your passion about your writing and speaking skills!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

College Counseling

My college degrees are in English education, with an emphasis on writing. I have taught both English and public speaking in a K-12 public school as well as owned and operated my own tutoring business for more than a decade. For many college bound high school students, the college application essay is one of the most important documents required. I have worked with several high schooler students, and several college students who were applying for a specific major or new program, with essays regarding their qualifications, interests, and reasons why they should be at a particular school or in a particular program. My goal is to help you clearly put into words all that you have to offer and get into the school of your choice.

Proofreading

After 20+ years as an educator teaching speech, writing, English and reading to middle school and high school students, I can proofread with speed, accuracy and skill. As a WyzAnt tutor, I have worked with International students at the college level which has given me the added skill of ensuring that what the writer is saying can be understood clearly by the reader. I especially like working online as a proofreader; I can make corrections and suggestions, send the document to the writer for approval, and make any other necessary changes. It is a great way to have an editor by your side while still utilizing your own writing and thinking talents.

Public Speaking

Public speaking is THE reason I became a teacher. I began college as a broadcasting major, and after one education course in language arts, I was hooked. I taught English, speech, reading and drama at the K-12 level. I was a member of the forensics team and judged competitions as well. I understand the apprehension of public speaking and would love to help you find your comfort zone as you share your words with an audience.

Study Skills

Study skills don't come in a box. There is no one right way to be successful. My goal is to help students understand how they learn and utilize those skills to benefit from instruction. As a middle school language arts teacher, I worked with my students on organization, note-taking, and test-taking skills. As the owner/director of a supplemental education center, my staff and I also taught time management and test-taking strategies. To get the most from a teaching environment is the greatest gift you can give yourself. Learn what it takes for you to be successful!

Writing

Writing is from the heart and the mind. In order to get others to understand your words, you want to to express yourself clearly, accurately and with a bit of yourself in there too! As your writing tutor, we will work on spelling, vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, mechanics and any other "skills" that you want to improve. Most importantly, I want to help you find your writing voice; your way of expressing yourself correctly. As an English teacher and a writer myself, I know we can work together for your success.
