Being curious about learning new things and having fun at it are keys to academic success, but not everyone knows how to access these principles. With over 25 years of experience teaching in classroom and private one-on-one settings, I have developed expertise in finding students' own ability to develop skills and build knowledge. I was honored to receive a Chimicles Writing Fellowship from the University of Pennsylvania as well as a Penfield Scholarship in Diplomacy, International Affairs, and Belles Lettre to do research. Advanced degrees in the humanities and specialized training in introductory composition and writing about literature have prepared me well to teach all manner of humanities and language arts subjects.

In class evaluations over the years, students have used words like genuine, humorous, fascinating, challenging to describe me as a teacher. I am really proud of these responses because the qualities described, I think, help create a wonderful learning environment. I want students to feel safe making mistakes and taking chances as they grow in the specific subject areas we are working with. I specialize in teaching reading and writing skills, grammar, and literature studies.

Because I want students to feel completely comfortable in our endeavor, I offer a free initial consultation meeting. I am flexible about where we meet for lessons and try to accommodate time preferences. Once we get started I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy.

Feel free to contact me. Let me know how I might assist you in building up your knowledge and skills.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

English

I hold a BA in English Literature from the University of Washington English Department. Since English is the dominant language around us, even if our native tongue is different, we have countless opportunities in reading, writing, listening and speaking to check our skills at any given point in the day. My tutoring method enables the student to recognize what to pay attention to in order to strengthen his/her ability. This model provides a dynamic intellectual environment for your English studies to advance on the road to success. English as a subject in school should prepare one to function better in school and outside of school.

Grammar

My educational background in grammar is two-fold:

1) I completed an English BA in college and

2) I have since high school worked extensively in a foreign language (Swedish), which highlighted grammar both in the target language and English. I view grammatical correctness as a tool to making oneself understood. If a student's meaning in speaking or writing is lost because of a grammatical error then it is very important to seek out the cause. On the other hand, I do not want grammar to get in the way of composition. Therefore, if we are working on a writing assignment that requires developing ideas, we will first overlook grammar to allow for a freedom of draft-writing. Then, second, we will go back and look at grammar. Grammar should be viewed as a guide to meaning, but not at the expense of creativity in the initial composition stage. Grammatical errors can be edited out later.

Literature

I hold a BA English Literature and an MA in Scandinavian Literature. I feel the key to develop your skills in reading and analyzing literature is find out how you access the world being depicted. These are all human stories about the human condition, and therefore provide tools for living. By meeting dozens if not hundreds of people through the characters in literary works, the reader gains tremendous experience to face whatever comes his/her way in life.

Proofreading

My proofreading skills developed over time from my own writing and editing other people's work. I think everyone intends to be a good proofreader but it's sometime hard to know exactly how to go about doing it. My tutoring provides proven approaches to getting the job done thoroughly and correctly.

Reading

In addition to being a lifelong and avid reader, I have completed a BA in English Literature, and an MA and a PhD in the humanities, all of which demanded thorough and sophisticated reading skills. I have also taught students in a range of subjects which have strong reading components. My tutoring methods include reading comprehension and critical thinking.

Vocabulary

I have found from my own experience that a good vocabulary continually evolves--you're not ever completely done adding new and more precise words--and it comes most naturally from being an active speaker, reader and writer. Those three functions develop both an active and passive vocabulary, so you will better be able to express yourself in a clear and confident way. Vocabulary lists can be a productive part of a study program, but learning and using words should be practiced mainly in their natural setting.

Writing

While working on my PhD in the humanities at the University of Pennsylvania, I received focused training in the teaching of writing and have taught writing to college students for over twenty years. The hallmark of my teaching is to take incremental steps through different emphases, therefore building confidence as we go. I also intersperse low-stakes writing, such as free writing, to encourage a flow in composition without worrying--at first--about making mistakes.

Caring and Friendly Tutor — My son has been working with Lars since September, and he enjoys the lessons very much. The first day, Lars brought a book and my son thought that was the "bestest" thing. He learned about the story and had a great time. Over the weeks, I have been working with Lars, communicating what has been taught at school and how my son is progressing. I like the fact that Lars works with us to come up with ...
