My name is Emily and I am currently finishing my M.S. thesis in Ecology
/Natural Resource Conservation. I was a T.A. in graduate school and was paid by my university to be a math
tutor when I was a junior and senior in college. Prior to that I taught French
to little kids in a language
immersion camp and worked with a kid I babysat for who had learning disabilities. I love tutoring, and take the responsibility very seriously. I see the work as a problem-solving challenge and adapt my methods until I feel my students understand everything from the theory, the holes in their background knowledge, how to solve problems and learn, and how these subjects fit into the bigger picture.
I work in Ecology but I have extensive education in math and science
, and am excellent at proofreading
essays & papers. I was born and raised in the U.S. but my parents are immigrants, so learning different languages was a huge part of my childhood. I speak both French (native) and Spanish
(non-native) fluently, with no accent, and have learned Italian
, Armenian, and Swahili. I've also worked abroad, including sub-Saharan Africa, so I adapt easily to new situations and have experience in a plethora of environments.
I love working with students, and I understand first-hand that it's difficult to translate knowledge & intelligence into doing well in school. My goal is to help students have confidence in their problem-solving skills so that they feel capable of tackling their tasks. I work with students to break down their work into smaller sections and creating roadmaps for completing assignments. I am patient, calm, and understanding, but also unrelenting and uncompromising when it comes to mistakes and a student's effort. I don't believe in giving an A for effort!
Thanks and I look forward to hearing from you!
