I am a previous elementary school teacher with a background in multi-sensory, hands-on learning techniques to support students with learning differences and those just needing extra support in specific curricular areas. My tutoring sessions target student's specific needs, include educational games to reinforce a love of learning and help student's see relevance in their work. I help support reflective thinking, self-advocacy and help students build self-confidence. My approach is systematic, building on your child's previous knowledge and skills and bolsters time management and organizational skills.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Dyslexia

I have been trained in the Wired for Reading methodology to support students with dyslexia become stronger readers and spellers. I have taken professional development courses in dyslexia and other language-based learning differences through the Dyslexia Training Institute, and I am a member of the International Dyslexia Association as well as the local Washington branch. I have been tutoring students with phonological awareness, rapid naming and other deficits characteristic of dyslexia for two years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a minor in education that required 30 hours per academic quarter of field service in an elementary classroom. Upon graduation, I taught 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade for 4 years at an independent elementary school. I developed differentiated, individualized curriculum across subject areas. Currently, I continue to develop and implement a variety successful strategies to support individualized learning.

Handwriting

I taught both print and D'Nealian cursive as an elementary school teacher. Additionally, I have been trained in the Handwriting without Tears methodology and have implemented this training with students. I have the materials including specific lined paper, stroke sequences and activities to build fine motor strength that support teaching handwriting in each of these styles.

ISEE

For the past 2 years I have been running ISEE test prep groups for students preparing to apply to middle school. Students who qualify for accommodations as well as those simply seeking to be fully prepared benefit from my one-on-one and small group coaching. I teach content-based skills for each of the test sections in addition to test-taking strategies, essay guidance and emotional support throughout the application process.

Phonics

I taught reading and phonics as a first grade teacher for two years. I have been tutoring students who need extra support in reading for a year and a half. I am trained in the Wired for Reading method through the advanced level.

Praxis

I scored very highly on both the West-B and West-E exams, and was granted admission to every teaching program to which I applied. I successfully taught elementary school for 4 years, and am very skilled in supporting study skills for standardized exams.

Study Skills

I taught elementary school for four years. Additionally, I currently work with students on a variety of executive functioning skills including time management, organization, prioritizing and breaking large projects into small manageable tasks. Building in routines, habits, and effective strategies to increase efficiency are critical for success across academic subjects. I can help students do just that.
