Columbia University class of 2011, Biochemistry major with honors, 3.82 GPA
Stanford University, Master's of Science in Biochemistry, Jan 2014
I have just earned my Master's degree in biochemistry and am looking to finally get the opportunity to teach others in the subjects I love most. I have extensive experience in both science and foreign language that I'd love to share with others.
I started my science career in 2009 with an Amgen Scholarship to research the pore-forming unit of an acid-sensing taste channel at the molecular and cellular level. I graduated from Columbia University with an honors degree in Biochemistry in 2011 with 2 years of research experience under my belt before joining the Biochemistry program at Stanford University to research the dynamics of photosynthetic membranes in cyanobacteria.
I started my career in languages by achieving fluency in Spanish and working for 2 summers as an assistant translator at Spanglish Unlimited in North Carolina. I have since achieved fluency in Mandarin Chinese as well, and used it to host delegations of student leaders from Peking University and Tsinghua University as Director of Events Management for Global China Connection. I am currently on the market as a translator and interpreter and in discussion for part-time work.
I have over 400 hours of tutoring experience through this and other sites. I've been encouraged to become a professor or teacher by many people, as they've found me very patient, helpful, and good at teaching. I've even helped friends and students with subjects I've never taken before, learning the material on the spot, and helping them answer their questions quickly.
I'd love to give advice on the college and graduate school application process as well, and can help students prepare for the SAT and GRE. I received a 2280 (800 math, 750 critical reading, 730 writing) on the SAT and performed similarly on the GRE (94+ percentile quantitative, 91 percentile verbal, 84 percentile analytical writing). I received scores of 5 on all AP tests I took (Biology, Calculus BC, Chemistry, Computer Science AB, Spanish Language, Spanish Literature, Statistics) and got a 790 on the Spanish SAT 2.
Also, with an undergrad Honors thesis and a 204-page Master's thesis under my belt, I'd be happy to help with writing as well.
I'm very happy to answer questions in any area and do research to find answers to any particularly curious questions students have. I'm friendly and professional and can give students a feel for what it takes to succeed in high school or college.
In my free time I watch movies to improve my Spanish and Chinese, enjoy art museums and photography, and love social and ballroom dancing with friends.
I've gotten straight A's and one A+ in 4 year's worth of Chinese at Columbia University (in NYC), I've hosted delegates of Chinese student leaders, and I've managed a team related to business in China (Director of Events Management for Global China Connection). My pronunciation and grammar are excellent (1st place in a speech competition at my study abroad program in Beijing), and I speak Chinese regularly with friends. I know both simplified and traditional characters, and I'm comfortable teaching with either/both. I feel I'm qualified to teach students of any age in years 1-3 (beginner - first year advanced) Mandarin Chinese.
I have taken and excelled in all coursework related to the MCAT throughout my Biochemistry degrees from Columbia (Bachelor's) and Stanford (Master's). I've also taken coursework beyond what the MCAT requires, including advanced organic chemistry, quantum physics, and many cellular and molecular biology courses. Furthermore, I've taken timed MCAT practice tests and scored 12's on both science sections (90+ percentile). I feel I can handle anything the MCAT throws at me, or at least find the answer quickly. I also greatly enjoy teaching the MCAT because it requires a sizable science background in all subjects.
I've taken both Organic Chemistry, Advanced Organic Chemistry, Bio-Organic Topics (organic chemistry for biology), and other advanced chemistry classes at Columbia University, receiving good grades in each (3.82 GPA overall). I have over 100 hours of experience tutoring chemistry, and have tutored organic chemistry before. I have no trouble explaining the concepts, and would love to tutor this fascinating subject more!
