I have been teaching English language skills for over 15 years. I have taught a broad range of subjects from ESL for adults to reading and writing techniques for young people. I love helping people learn and grow.

In ESL, I specialize in speaking skills. To teach pronunciation, I have developed 500 Common word lists (great for beginning to intermediate students) and a 750 Business Words class (perfect for advanced professionals). I can also tutor in grammar skills, daily conversations, idioms, TOEFL prep and USMLE prep.

In language arts, I have taught classes and tutored in reading and writing skills at all age levels. I received training in phonics, spelling and reading comprehension techniques through the Institute of Reading Development. Additionally, I taught Freshman English Composition at the college level for three years while obtaining my Master's degree. When tutoring, I believe in building on strengths and in carefully teaching points of grammar or comprehension so that students achieve success.

As you can see, I do enjoy English teaching. I'm always interested in learning new aspects of the language and that has led to many fascinating experiences. Let me know if I can work with you!

ESL/ESOL

I have been teaching English for over 15 years. For ten years, I taught beginning to advanced English levels at a social service agency. Since then, I have been tutoring students as well as professionals in pronunciation, grammar and test prep.

Grammar

I have used both traditional and more contemporary methods to teach grammar. The traditional way is to teach the various tenses and assign practice in writing sentences in these tenses. However, I can also teach with a modelling technique. This way, the rules of grammar are less emphasized. I teach them a little bit, but focus on helping students to model different kinds of sentences.

Literature

With three years of experience as a Freshman English teacher at the university level, I can assist young people in examining literature to understand universal themes and to interpret different styles of writing.

Proofreading

I have a B.A. in English and a Master's in creative writing. I have worked with several professionals who requested my assistance in proofing their important emails, websites and advertising materials.

TOEFL

I have helped numerous students prepare for the TOEFL test. In particular, I have had several students who requested tutoring after having failed the speaking tests. All of these students passed the test after the tutoring. For other sections, I work with students to find their best test-taking strategies. I have students take sections of the test and then evaluate why questions are missed. This helps students to study the right areas between tutoring lessons.

Writing

I have a Master's degree in creative writing, and I also used to teach essay writing. I can assist students with creative nonfiction, fiction, poetry, persuasive essays, research papers, college entrance essays and more. I always strive to help students feel confident and satisfied with their work!
