I was born in Cincinnati, OH, but have spent more than half of my life living, schooling, and working abroad (Australia, Malaysia and Japan). Today's world is becoming increasingly rich in its diversity. The ability to adapt to and to appreciate other cultures is therefore becoming an increasingly valuable skill. This so happens to be my expertise. An important aspect to understanding culture is language
. Language is a key element in achieving effective communication. Good communication leads to better understanding. Understanding breeds appreciation. I can teach English
and Malay conversation, as well as provide relevant cultural insight.
My teaching philosophy
is simple: Make the subject matter approachable. People who I've worked with - be it students, colleagues or friends - have told me that my teaching and explanations are easy to follow. While I attended Occidental College in Los Angeles, I taught English and Math
to children of low-income first generation families as a volunteer. My other teaching experience includes 2 years teaching English Conversation, Grammar
to high school students in Nagasaki, Japan as a participant of the Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program, and tutoring the elementary school-aged children of Japanese expatriates in English while living in Malaysia.
Teaching aside, I have worked in the corporate world in roles involving translation and interpretation work in English-Japanese-Malay. I am excited to work with students of all ages and backgrounds. My goal is to introduce language to my students in a way that isn't overwhelming (and that they can actually find FUN!), with a stronger focus on conversation and cross-cultural communication.
Thank you for your consideration. I look forward to hearing from you!
