Hello! Thank you for reading my profile. My name is Mary and I am an award-winning educator specializing in reading, writing, study skills, speeches, ESL, and students with special needs. I pride myself on my ability to reach ALL students in a positive way that makes learning fun. I am highly creative, patient, compassionate, energetic, flexible, and very supportive. I have a bachelor's degree in Special education, a Master's degree in Learning Disabilities and Reading, a Certificate of Advanced Study in Elementary School Administration, and a doctorate ( Ph.D.) in Adult Education. I have successfully taught students from ages 7- 60 with all kinds of backgrounds. I have traveled internationally and tutored Spaniards in English each summer in Madrid, Spain. ACT Reading

I have worked with college students for over 20 years as a professor. In addition, I taught reading to K-12 students for over 5 years as well as college success reading for over 10 years.

ADD/ADHD

I have a BS degree in Special Education from Blooomsburg State College and a MS in Learning Disabilities from Bloomsburg University. I was a certified Reading Specialist before my certification expired. ADD/ADHD are categories of special education. I have also taught this population at the K-12 and community college level.

Cooking

I am a lifelong baker. I have been baking since I was 10. My specialty areas are cookies and pies which are enthusiastically received by my friends and coworkers at the community college where I teach.

In addition, I took an Easy as Pie baking workshop put on by PCC Supermarket. I gobble up cookbooks the way people gobble up cookies!

With the exception of the hot summer months I generally bake goodies from scratch once per week.

I love to bake!

Dyslexia

I have a BS degree in Special Education from Blooomsburg State College and a MS in Learning Disabilities and Reading from Bloomsburg University. I was a certified Reading Specialist before my certification expired. Dyslexia is a type of Learning Disability. I have also taught dyslexic students at the K-12 and community college levels.

Elementary (K-6th)

I am qualified to teach Elementary ( K-6th) for several reasons. First, I had been a certified special education teacher, grades K-12, for many years, both in WA and NY state.

In addition, I spent over 4 years working as a filed supervisor for City University of Seattle, evaluating student teachers in K-6 schools.

Finally, I hold 4 educational degrees in education, including a B.S degree in special education; a MS degree in Learning Disabilities and Reading Specialist; a C.A.S
(Certificate of Advanced Study) in Elementary School Administration, and a Ph.D. in Adult Education. I love teaching and bringing out the best in each student!

English

While I do not have a degree in English, I am qualified to teach this subject for several reasons. In addition to my Ph.D. from Syracuse University, I am also a published author with over 40 articles to my credit.

In addition, I have been a community college and university professor for over 20 years. I easily read over 300 student papers each year and I can quickly spot writing errors and suggest ways to improve a students' writing.

Finally, I own a writing and editing company that helps people become better writers. These are just a few reasons why I am qualified in English.

ESL/ESOL

I have a great deal of experience working with ESL/ESOL students. This includes 20 years teaching ESL/ESOL students at a local community college. In addition, I serve as a volunteer English/Conversation English, including vocabulary, grammar, informal conversation, and written communication for the past 7 years in Madrid,Spain.

Grammar

As a community college professor, I read and grade, on average, 300 papers a year. I have a sharp eye for writing errors, as my students will tell you!

In addition, I am a published author with over 40 newspaper articles to my credit. I need to be super careful in submitting work to my editor, hence my solid grammar tutoring skills.

Finally, I actively look for grammatical errors in clients' writing, including dissertations and theses, among other papers, in my small business, Clarity Writing and Editing.

Phonics

I have a BS degree in Special Education from Blooomsburg State College and a MS in Learning Disabilities and Reading from Bloomsburg University. I was a certified Reading Specialist before my certification expired. I taught phonics to K-6 students. In addition, I taught future teachers at both the bachelor's and master's levels how to teach phonics.

Proofreading

I am well-qualified to tutor in proofreading for many reasons. These include my work as a community college professor where I read and grade, on average, 300 papers a year. I have a sharp eye for writing errors, as my students will tell you!

In addition, I am a published author with over 40 newspaper articles to my credit. I need to be super careful in submitting work to my editor, hence my solid proofreading skills.

Finally, I proofread work in my small business, Clarity Writing and Editing.

Public Speaking

My experience in public speaking is evidenced in 2 forms: A) I taught public speaking to K-12 students and community college students. B) Since 2007 I have served as a volunteer English tutor assisting Spanish professionals in public speaking and conversational English. Finally, I have taught and supervised student teachers in the classroom. A big part of what student teachers must do is to speak effectively and I would coach them in being more effective speakers.

Reading

I have a MAED in Learning Disabilities and Reading from Bloomsburg University of PA. This program included certification as a Reading Specialist. In addition, I taught remedial and developmental reading for 10+ years in my work as a community college professor.

Special Needs

I have a BS degree in Special Education from Blooomsburg State College and a MS in Learning Disabilities and Reading from Bloomsburg University. I was a certified Reading Specialist before my certification expired. I have had extensive teaching experience with Special Needs students at the K-12 and community college levels.

Spelling

I am well-qualified to tutor in spelling for many reasons. I am a published author with over 40 newspaper articles to my credit. I need to be super careful in submitting work to my editor, hence my solid spelling skills.

I've taught spelling in my work as a special education teacher, grades K12. In addition, I have also taught spelling to struggling community college students for 10+ years.

I coordinated the Writing Lab at Olympic College and one are that I supported tutors was in helping students with their spelling.

I know multiple tricks and memory tools to help people become good spellers. These strategies are based on the person's learning style and are very effective!

Study Skills

I have taught study skills and college success classes and workshops at the community college for over 10 years. My favorite study skills textbook is The Master Student by Dave Ellis. I delight in helping students succeed at college!

TOEFL

It is my experiences, coupled with my Ph.D. in Adult Education from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY, that make me well-qualified to tutor TOEFL. I have a great deal of experience working with ESL/ESOL students. This includes 20 years teaching ESL/ESOL students at a local community college. In addition, I serve as a volunteer English/Conversation English, including vocabulary, grammar, informal conversation, and written communication for the past 7 years in Madrid,Spain.

Vocabulary

I am well-qualified to tutor in vocabulary for many reasons.

I grew up in a home where having a good vocabulary was super important. I read constantly and that has impacted my vocabulary. I am one of these people that loves words!

I currently teach a course in College Success at Argosy University and vocabulary is one of the topics in the course that I teach.

In addition, I am a published author with over 40 newspaper articles to my credit. I need to be super careful in submitting work to my editor, hence my solid Vocabulary skills.

Finally, I regularly assist community college students and ESL students with expanding their vocabulary.

Writing

I believe I am well- qualified to tutor writing for several reasons. I have spent my career as an educator helping struggling writersof all ages and grades to be successful. This includes elementary students working on reports and the Six-Trait Writing Process, middle school and high school students with essays, and community college- through doctoral students on research papers, theses, and dissertations.

I love helping students become excited by writing.

I also have a great deal of experience helping ESL/ ESOL students with writing.
In addition, I am a published writer.
