I am new to Seattle, but not new to languages and teaching. I was a Peace Corps volunteer in Kazakhstan, where I taught school and university English. I passed Peace Corps TESOL training course at the beginning of my volunteer placement. I also taught private English lessons in Japan during my yearlong study abroad course in Tokyo. I speak both Russian and Japanese fluently, and I can tutor these languages to an intermediate level, as well.

I consider myself a expert in the differences between American and British English, including the grammatical nuances, phrases, jokes, and other cultural insights.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Golf

I played golf from the age of 10. My best handicap was a 6. I taught as an assistant at Balance Point Golf Schools in Portland, Oregon for a couple of years. I am a student of the game.

Japanese

I started studying the language at age 14, in eighth grade. I studied it all the way though high school and college, receiving a minor in Japanese from Oregon State University in 2005. I also lived in Tokyo for a year from 2004 to 2005. I've also worked at the Japanese Consulate General here in Seattle.

Russian

I lived in Kazakhstan for two years, and I worked as a translator in Russia and the US for two years after that. I am an avid student of Russian language.

TOEFL

I taught TOEFL preparation classes to students at West Kazakhstan State University. I am familiar with new changes to the TOEFL.
