After 18 years in my hometown of Starkville, I moved to Hattiesburg to major in Psychology at the University of Southern Mississippi. By the end of Freshman year, I was sure that I needed a second major, and Spanish was the first subject to come to mind. I fell in love with the language as a high-schooler and eventually found myself in an exchange program in Spain for a semester during my Junior year.

Recently, I earned my TEFL/TESOL certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language/Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) through an intensive, four-week course in Costa Rica. As part of our final requirement, I was able to gain hands-on experience teaching one-hour classes to Costa Rican students.

I am open to tutoring in any particular sector of Spanish or English as a second language. I have completed classes on grammar, writing, cultures & civilizations, and even the culinary arts as part of my Spanish degree; my TEFL/TESOL program included modules covering lesson planning, class management, grammar, vocabulary, writing, test assessment, and other relevant language sectors.

I try to be flexible with time, and while I do have a 24-hour cancellation policy, the lesson for a cancelled class may be moved to the next meeting time. Class schedules are constructed around student's needs, but I will be unavailable until around 3:00pm on weekdays starting Sept 15th.

I will tutor for specific struggles such as pronunciation or grammar-- if a student would like to bring his/her work with her we can work on those specific assignments. I can also design a series of lesson plans for those seeking to learn more generally over the course of designated days/weeks/months.

I look forward to hearing from you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

While I do not hold a state teaching license, I have had experience with elementary children in an academic setting. During my college years at the University of Southern Mississippi, I volunteered as a mentor/tutor for a third grader through Big Brothers Big Sisters, helping specifically with Math and English. I have also worked as a Lead Group Writer at Mississippi State University's Summer Scholars Onstage Camp for the past four years, guiding groups of adolescents to compose an original act of a 3-act musical. I hold B.A. degrees in Psychology and Spanish, and a TEFL/TESOL certificate to teach English as a Second Language.

ESL/ESOL

I gained my TEFL/TESOL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language / Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) certification in 2013 through an intensive program within Máximo Nivel in Costa Rica. The program included modules covering lesson planning, class management, grammar, vocabulary, writing, test assessment, and other relevant language sectors. The last week of training required running our own classes independently, teaching to Costa Rican students of various ages.

Spanish

I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in Spanish from the University of Southern Mississippi. During my program, I spent a semester as an exchange student at the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares in Spain, taking various courses taught in Spanish and also an extra one specifically on the language's grammar and usage. Since then, I have taught three students on WyzAnt several lessons in pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary, etc.
