I'm a professional writer who has excellent rapport with youth, an interactive and creative approach to instruction, and a love of words and self-expression. I've taught theatre to high schoolers, creative writing to teenagers in lockup, and taught poetry to senior citizens. In my freelance work, I've written travel articles for USA Today, edited novels and biographies, and even ghost-written two books on teaching!

My love of the written word makes me passionate about writing and reading, so I love working with students at both. I've worked with all grade, skill, and literacy levels, and for me it's all about finding what the student is excited about. A recent student discovered he actually really enjoyed writing when he was writing about things he was excited about (Spiderman, animals, other countries) rather than doing rote assignments. That's always been my approach, finding the key that unlocks the enthusiasm, and then the sky's the limit.

If you have a child that wants to tell stories and you're not sure how to get him or her started, I can help. If you just need someone to spend more time working with your student on basic reading and writing skills, I can help with that, too. If you're preparing for a big test like the SAT and you need to really focus on reading comprehension or study skills...you got it, I'd love to help you with that as well!

I also love theatre, and am available to teach, coach, or direct youth.

I work for myself, so my schedule is flexible enough to be available during the day for homeschool students as well.

Thanks for your time!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Theatre

I minored in theatre in college, appearing in a number of productions, and directing both a short play and a short film. After moving to Seattle, I became seriously involved in the theatre community there, sitting on the board of a small theatre company, directing a number of shows, and helping start an arts non-profit. I continue to write, direct, and produce fringe theatre. I have taught a number of acting workshops for youth and adults.
