My Bachelor's degree is in art, with a focus in computer based design. I've worked successfully in web design for more than 17 years; in my own business, as a contractor, and in a corporation. My design skills are up to date and strong, as I continue to manage and re-design websites on the side and during vacations. Over the years, I have taught adults and teens the concepts and techniques of web design and content management; including HTML, CSS, Dreamweaver, Flash, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.
After 10 years, I decided to make a change toward where my heart lay; teaching children. I received my Master's in Teaching Degree from the UW in both Special Education and in General Education. I developed the skills to successfully teach, advocate for, and to understand the needs of students from the ages of 4 to 13. I have also worked with middle school students as a tutor in Literature and Writing. I have spent the past seven years successfully teaching students from many cultures, and with very diverse abilities, needs, and home lives, as a special education and a general education teacher in the Mercer Island and the Seattle School Districts. I’ve always had the deep rooted belief of equality in education, and that every student can be successful in academics; they just need the right style of teaching to suit their individual learning needs, and caring support along the way.
I decided to take a break from the classroom this year, and to work 1:1 instead. As a special ed teacher, I have become very strong in developing individualized learning plans to teach my students, and I am very adept at preparing 3rd, 4th, and 5th graders for their MSP's, MAP, and other tests. My students' test scores improve significantly when they are under my teaching care. As I just decided to take the year off, I am completely up to date on the latest classroom instruction and curricula. Literacy is my passion, and I excel at helping struggling readers to grow much faster than they would in a typical school year. I am empathetic, intuitive, creative, caring, and an excellent teacher. I love teaching, and I really enjoy helping my students to feel good about themselves; they work hard, have fun, and learn a lot.
