I spent ten years teaching adolescents various courses in Social Studies. As a teacher, I understood that each child had to construct meaning out of their learning in their own way. Students chose topics for projects that were meaningful for them and still applied to the standards set by the state of Washington. While my endorsement was in Social Studies, students often asked me for help in a wide range of subjects. This also was true when I was a student.
When I was younger, many of my fellow students asked for help because I had a way of helping them that made sense. I found that most students just needed some help putting the pieces together once or twice. Sometimes, students would be missing one minor piece or skipping several steps and I helped them see where they needed to refocus their efforts.
My tutoring approach is fairly simple. I ask a lot of questions and work with you as you might a classmate. My goal is to help you become an independent learner with problem solving skills and a love of learning. As you grow, it is the ability to reason and come to decent conclusions that matters a great deal. It is also important to recognize the requirements of the task set before you. In these matters, I have been a solid performer as both a student and a teacher. In each role, I have always helped others find their way as well.
Having worked with a wide range of adolescents of different backgrounds, I am comfortable meeting wherever suits your needs. I want to help you realize your space for accomplishing your goals. I will help you get organized in a specially tailored way.
I have traveled through much of the United States and have traveled to Europe. I enjoy games, comedy and riding my bicycle. I speak basic German and love to travel. These experiences add to my ability to tutor because I have experienced much in my life and have much to share. I am especially interested in topics of social justice, racial parity and gender bias. This usually informs the way I teach, but also the way I approach my work as a tutor.
Should you ever have questions or comments, feel free to contact me at any time. You can expect thoughtful and meaningful responses to your questions, usually within 24 hours. I would rather get you a good answer than a simple, timely response. I look forward to working with you.
Regards,
Joseph

ACT Reading

I perform quite well on standardized tests and the ACT is no exception. As a former teacher, I helped prepare students for the rigorous reading they find on the ACT and looked on with pride as they did well on their exams. I will bring that same level of caring preparation to our work together.

Algebra 1

I am fairly well versed in Algebra I and have a knack for helping others understand it as well.

American History

I taught United States history for 4 years to seventh graders in Seattle. I am well versed in American history, both in details and as a discipline - the ways it is recorded and passed down. I bring a wealth of experience and insight to this particular subject and look forward to helping you.

ASVAB

I am endorsed by WyzAnt to tutor individuals seeking to score well on the ASVAB. I have a history of doing well on tests like the ASVAB. With my expertise of test structure and performance, I make a solid candidate to help study for this exam.

English

I have read a lot of books, written a lot of papers and read a lot of dictionary entries. My command of the English language is fairly strong - both written and oral. I can help you with your English, no matter what the task we must complete.

ESL/ESOL

As a teacher, I had many students who were English Language Learners. They posed a challenge in a text-driven class, but I gained a solid understanding of the types of support that helped most. My experience can help you on your way to learning English at any level.

European History

I am familiar with the broad scope of European history from the ancient Greeks until the present. I am a solid researcher and know how to write historical essays well. As an excellent student of history - as well as a former teacher, I can help you with any questions you may have in this subject.

Geography

As a former teacher, I spent 3 years teaching World Geography to eighth graders. As a student, geography was always a passion - I even went so far as to regularly freehand maps of the world. As a tutor, I bring that same passion and expertise to the study of geography, both physical and human.

Government & Politics

I taught AP United States Government and Politics for 2 years. I am a political junkie who pays attention to the course of state and federal politics. I have an intimate knowledge of the Constitution and the workings of our national system. Let me use my experience to your advantage.

Prealgebra

I have helped many of my former students with Pre-Algebra. As a teacher, many students who were frustrated with the material asked me to help explain it to them. They found my explanations helpful, as evidenced by their independence in later work. Let me do the same for you.

Reading

Reading is a complex task, depending on the purpose of the author. I understand the structure of different kinds of texts and the problems unique to each. Let me help you find your way through the written word.

World History

I taught World History over 4 years as a high school teacher. I know a good deal about the general scope and sequence, but I also understand a lot about the ways historians write and think. I work on history curriculum on my own time and understand how students need to be supported in this discipline.

Writing

I have an excellent score on the WyzAnt test and numerous writing samples which attest to my ability to write. I also have helped others write, having been a teacher for 10 years.
