Hello, my name is Cintya,

As a second language speaker myself I know the importance of language immersion. I came to the United States from Veracruz, Mexico with no English skills at all in December 2004. I have taken several English classes in different settings and levels such as ESL, community college and university. For me, it is all about reading, writing and talking about topics you find interesting. First, because it helps to facilitate the hard and long process of learning a new language. Personally, that helped me to build the confidence I needed to communicate in another language. By doing so, I was not only practicing what I have learned, but understanding the language instead of memorizing vocabulary.

I am a strong believer that students should build upon their strengths and not their weaknesses. And, I am more in favor of a organic way of learning. However, not all students learn that way and I understand some need to have the basics taught in a more traditional and structural way. That is why I do an assessment of the student's needs at no cost to see if we are the right fit for each other(usually via phone). I have been teaching my own daughter, my nephews and nieces as well as family friend's children. Their ages ranges from 2 to 7.

When I was in the Navy in Veracruz Mexico, I was assigned to work at summer camps for the children of the Mexican Naval employees. The summers were one month in length and included some tutoring, although it was more about outdoor activities. During that time I helped students ages 8 to 10 with Spanish (identifying subjects, verbs and punctuation) and Math.

I have also tutored math to the teenagers at the Juvenile Detention Center in Seattle. It was a great and rewarding experience to work with this population. I volunteered there for 3 months as part of many of my service learning classes at Seattle University. Some students were really behind in basic math and others amazingly were doing very well. What I loved about the teacher there, was his approach to the subject and his openness to the students. Everyone, was free to ask the most silly questions and he would happily answer as many times as it was necessary. What I took from that experience is to be patience and to accommodate and adjust to the student's needs.

I am eager to help others who struggle with Spanish and to become more confident when communicating in Spanish. I hope you can give me the opportunity to help you and serve you as many teacher's have helped me to understand English.
