I’m a college academic with tutoring expertise in Language Arts (reading, writing, spelling and comprehension), History, Social Studies and the development of successful study skills. I also specialize in middle/high school homework and organization skills, and have over 8 years’ experience working with elementary through college level students. My tutoring services include support for non-native English speakers.

I encourage my students to develop good study habits as a firm foundation for academic success. I am sensitive to individual styles of learning and strive to tailor each session to best suit each student's needs and interests. Regular homework is designed to reinforce what we have learned while practicing the essential academic skills of organization and time management.

Outside of my tutoring work, I am an avid runner, knitter, reader and writer. My passion has always been Ancient Egypt and I graduated top of my class in Ancient History and Archaeology and have a Ph.D in Ancient Egyptian Art History. I'm currently working with a group of college undergraduates training them to transcribe and digitize a nineteenth century travel journal.

I tutor in Seattle's U District and am available one evening a week in Lake Forest Park.

I have a 24 hour cancellation policy but offer make-up classes. I look forward to working with you!

I have a BA First Class Honors (University of Birmingham, UK) in Ancient History and Archaeology. My studies included the theory of archaeology, together with an archaeological study of the Iron Age in Britain and Europe, the Greek Dark Ages and the archaeology of the Near East, particularly Ancient Egypt. I have completed several seasons of field work and post-excavation finds processing in Israel and in the UK.

I have a BA (Hons) First Class degree in Ancient History and Archaeology from the University of Birmingham, UK. Course modules afforded me a broad overview of Greek and Roman civilizations, including experience conducting archaeological excavation at Roman sites in the UK. My minor specialty was 'Bronze Age Greece,' encompassing the study of the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations.

Elementary (K-6th)

I've worked with elementary and middle school students as a tutor both privately and for Seattle Public Schools for the past five years. During this time, I've taught students individually, and worked with groups of up to 10 offering support in reading, writing and study skills. I have also offered individual tutoring to elementary ESL students, and those identified by their teachers as needing extra learning support.

As a Humanities specialist, my foundation and background are in the correct use and application of English, to include grammar, spelling, punctuation and composition. I'm passionate about literature and use books and reading as a starting point in my teaching of English.

I work one-to-one or with small groups of elementary school children, teaching the basics of phonics in a fun and accessible way. I've used the book 'Teach your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons' which has helped students learn to recognize letters and then vocalize the alphabet, before putting the sounds together to begin reading. This method is endorsed by schools across the country and in my experience has proven to be both engaging and successful. I supplement this work with games, practice and plenty of encouragement!

I work in elementary public school settings as a reading tutor (both one-on-one and with small groups). I have used 'Teach Your Child to Read in 100 Easy Lessons', supplemented by playing alphabet and word games. With older students, we work to identify where the stumbling block are, and work intensively to practice reading a variety of materials. My aim is to build confidence while developing competence! I always tailor my teaching strategy to individual needs, and aim to work with material that interests and encourages each student to read on...

Social Studies

I have been employed by Seattle Public Schools to tutor individual students in social studies (4th-8th grade). Using my background in history (to PhD level) I have helped students work through social studies units, teaching them how to research effectively and how to construct analytical and engaging essays.

Study Skills

I have assisted a number of middle school students, at the school's request, in developing effective study skills habits. These have started in the student's own backpack, working to organize binders, identify deadlines for homework. Of particular use was the time spent learning how to use a homework planner to best effect; often the students simply couldn't remember what their homework was since they hadn't written it down! I have liaised with teachers to tailor help to each student's needs.

My writing experience has included working with students as they plan and then write narrative, expository, descriptive and argumentative essays. I work to break the process into manageable and logical stages, working with spelling and word choice, sentence construction and overall flow. The ideas and opinions are always the student's own - my job is to help with the process so that it doesn't become overwhelming or confusing.
