I have over 16 years' experience working with students from preschool to high school level, both in classroom instruction and as an intervention/literacy specialist. My specialty is motivating boys to read, special needs reading instruction, special needs writing instruction, twice exceptional students, and test preparation. I have a bachelor's degree in reading and special education, a master's degree in teaching learning and assessment, and a doctorate in instructional leadership. I work out of my home in a quiet and book-filled office. I want to find the perfect book and the perfect topic to write about for every learner!
My strategy has always been to find the unique genius in every one of my students. I want to use interests and strengths to help students reach the stars!
My goal is to help all students meet grade-level standards, and I love it when students meet standards and no longer need my help!
I have a valid Washington State Teaching certificate, and have a special education endorsement in K-8. I also have over 16 years teaching experience with students of various disabilities and skill levels. ADHD and ADD are a specific area of interest for me, as it is debilitating for many students. I work with students with attention deficits on how to self-regulate, organize themselves, and strategic help seeking. I have also trained teachers in how to work with students with attention deficits.
I have had many students with autism and autism spectrum disorders in the past 16 years of teaching. Specifically, I helped diagnose a student in my classroom with Aspergers by reporting symptoms. Students with Aspergers need to have instructions and settings modified to their specific strengths and preferences. Students with Aspergers need extra help in creating relationships and noticing emotional details.
I have a wide range of experience with students who have disabilities, including students with autism and autism spectrum disorders. I collaborated with a self-contained autism teacher to integrate students into the general education classroom. I also have a special education endorsement, which includes training in autism and autism spectrum disorders.

I have a valid Washington state teaching certificate, with endorsements in elementary education, special education K-8, and reading. Specifically, I have created and implemented reading curriculum for some Seattle schools. In terms of phonics instruction, I believe that phonics needs to be independent and automatic. I gear my phonics instruction to the specific student's needs and strengths, whether that is worksheets at home, phonics games, word work, or writing the list of interventions goes on and on.
