I tutor because I love science and math, I'm good at solving problems, and I enjoy sharing interesting ideas.
I studied computer science in college, with additional coursework in biology, physics, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, and linguistics. After graduation I worked as a technical writer and computer programmer for eight years. I enjoy writing, editing, and illustrating, and I have a deep understanding of computers, how they work, and how to make them work.
In addition to my education I've traveled extensively in India and southeast Asia, I get out to the local trails with my young boy whenever I can, and I draw and paint from life.
As a teacher, I identify the concepts and techniques that aren't yet understood, and I work with diligence until the student really truly gets it. I teach with patience and thought, but I don't waste time. I focus on the task at hand because I love it when understanding begins. Ben is a great tutor. He is fun to work with and has a very strong and thorough understanding of precalculus, the class he has been helping me with. His obvious love of math is infectious to the reluctant student (me). He is always punctual, responds quickly, and keeps focused on the task at hand. He is very intuitive regarding how I learn and what I need to practice and work on. I highly recommend him for any of the subjects he lists on his bio.
Benjamin is always on time, he quickly grasps the physics topic(s) my student is trying to understand, and then together they work out the solutions. He's my student's "go to guy" when she needs help understanding the concepts.
When I first sat down with Ben, I explained that I was getting by in my class, but not understanding what I was learning. As he explained things I was able to actually picture the different mechanisms in a cell working, and imagine how the processes work. He is extremely direct in how he teaches and so easy to work with.
Ben helped my daughter study for a test today. Not only did they cover a lot of material in one hour, but he also took the initiative to work with her on discerning what information was important and how to best break down the information to remember it for the test. Essentially she had two lessons in one: one on the material itself, and another on learning valuable study skills!
"It's working!" is what my son said to me after his substitute math teacher handed out a worksheet to complete in class.
Although the math problems on the worksheet were not new, many of the students still did not understand how to solve these equations. My son was able to work side by side with several classmates helping them just as Ben had showed him.
We have only had two sessions and already my son has made improvements and is feeling more confident in this class. I am looking forward to seeing how my son's GPA will improve.
Benjamin is very well-prepared and delivers 5-Star tutoring every week to our 8th grader (math, algebra, geometry, statistics and more); he is patient and communicates well; he keeps parents well-informed. He rates 5 stars on all his lessons - (I missed the first one (Jan 20th) because my gmail account is sometimes not cooperative or interactive with incoming mail).
Very knowledgeable, connects my son's studies to previous and future assignments, my son (15) thinks Ben is fun (I hear them laughing). They complete assignments, and my son's grade in Physical Science has gone up 2 letter grades in the short time he has worked with Ben. Ben does a very good job! Always on time.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I've been using algebra in my life and my studies for many years. I love teaching algebra in particular because a solid foundation in this subject is useful throughout life.
Advanced algebra is one of my favorite subjects to teach. With more realistic and challenging problems, I feel that this is the point at which math really becomes interesting and hopefully fun. With each student my goal is to build good habits, actual understanding, and a solid foundation that can be brought into future math and science classes.
I've completed 3 quarters of college level chemistry with a 4.0 GPA. I teach by breaking problems down into simple steps and keeping careful track of all quantities as we work.
I earned my BA in Computer Science from UC Berkeley, and worked for several years in the software industry as a programmer and technical writer. I understand how computers work from the CPU to the end user.
I earned my BA from UC Berkeley in Computer Science and I've worked in the computer industry for 8 years. I've used computers for my professional, academic, and personal life. I know how they work inside out.
I've used basic geometry in subjects ranging from calculus to graphical programming to physics. It's a beautiful and important foundational subject for so many interesting topics, and deserves a solid understanding.
Working as a technical writer in the software industry, I wrote, edited, illustrated, and published professional documentation.
I have a deep understanding of English grammar and usage, and a keen eye for readability.
I received a 5 on the physics AP test, and later a 4.0 on general college-level physics. I find physics super fun and satisfying, and I'm always eager to tackle problems.
I've practice Ashtanga and related styles of yoga for over 12 years, with many teachers in America, Thailand, and India. I've taught groups and privates for over 5 years. I enjoy leading a vigorous practice with inversions and strength building, as well as a passive practice with focus on building flexibility, stillness, and meditation.
