I have taught history, English and AVID classes on the high school-level for the past 7+ years and am trying to save enough money for a down payment on a house! I have my National Board of Professional Teaching Standards Certificate in History/Social Studies, was the social studies department chair for two years, and am the Social Media Director of the Washington State Council for the Social Studies. I am the AP Coordinator for my school and I currently teach AP World History, US History, and AVID. In past years, I taught AP US History, Modern World History, Ancient Civilizations, Pre-AP English 10, and Humanities classes in addition to every level of AVID. Because of my work with my AVID classes (AVID is a college-prep program for students who need extra support to be able to access college), I have done a lot of work with SAT and ACT prep.
What these credentials don't tell you is that I am a relaxed, warm demander, that my students end up coming to my office hours after school just for the heck of it, that I laugh a lot and wear goofy "time machine" goggles before every historical lecture, and that I can talk music with just about anyone.
I love working with students one-on-one and have been tutoring since I was 12 years old. I am very good at creating a supportive, positive, authentic rapport with teenagers. My specialties are supporting students as they read dense (sometimes boring) history textbooks and teaching them how to write concise, meaningful, evidence-based essays in short amounts of time.
