The University of Dayton, Dayton, OH (Middle Childhood Ed)
Boston College Lynch School of Education (MEd)
My name is Amy, and I love to work one-on-one with middle level students, from those struggling with learning disorders to gifted students, as well as adults and children who are learning English as a second language.
I have my BS from the University of Dayton in middle childhood education, and my Master's of Education in Curriculum and Instruction from Boston College where I focused my studies on teaching bilingual students. I am currently teaching middle school humanities at a private school in Seattle. I have privately tutored students in grades 4-12, ranging from customized writing and math instruction to SAT/ACT language prep to ESL support. I have also taught adults in ESL, privately and at ESL schools. I listed myself as a middle level instructor because I am particularly experienced working with students in grades 4-8.
My approach to tutoring is that each child/person has unique needs, so I am very careful to customize my instruction as much as possible. I use a variety of instructional methods and techniques, and I am very resourceful with my instruction, incorporating technology, manipulatives and other outside resources when I can. I also think that having open communication with the student's parents and teachers is important, so that the instruction will lead to meaningful, lasting improvement for the student's learning.
I look forward to hearing from you! Hi everyone,

My son attends public school. Despite the good reputation, we find that the school does not challenge him enough. We worked with Amy in English writing to supplement the public school education. In addition to being highly resourceful and effective in her tutoring, Amy is absolutely delightful, reliable, and extremely punctuate. Due to her vast experience in middle school education, it was seamless for Amy to map out my son’s tutoring plan and to elevate his writing to a new level.
Amy has been reliable, flexible on scheduling, and above all a focused, relaxed, and cheerful tutor. She has a gentle way of making our daughter do the thinking -- not just telling her what's right. Thanks Amy!
My son spent most part of his 3rd grade struggling on different fronts. He had trouble focusing and following instructions, his grades were poor and the standardized test scores below average. The school seemed to have no clear method to deal with him and insisted on testing for possible learning disabilities. At that point we decided to hire Amy and in few weeks the situation was entirely transformed. The school teachers were the first to see improvement. My son soon acquired the confidence and focus that allowed him to manage his own schedule and tasks, he became proactive and engaged. Amy was instrumental in this change. She was effective right away, working on organization and time management skills while at the same time keeping up with the school curriculum. She was patient, but detailed, had a clear plan and executed it seamlessly. I couldn't recommend her more.
Amy has turned our academically struggling 14-year old son into an achiever. While his issue had never been understanding the material, he lacked the organization and study skills to be successful. Amy worked with him to develop strategies on how to approach his work as a whole, be detail oriented and to study for exams. We truly appreciate the difference Amy has made!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I am a certified MA educator for 5-8 grade humanities, but I also have several years of experience privately tutoring students who are in the younger grades. I am currently a supervisor for Boston College student teachers who are doing their student teaching in grades K-5. So I spend two days a week at local Boston schools working with student teachers to improve their instruction in K-5 classrooms. I am also studying Curriculum and Instruction through Boston College's graduate program.
I took an undergraduate course on the use of Phonics when instructing elementary students in reading and writing. I also have experience tutoring students whose teachers are using a phonics curriculum.
I have a lot of experience working one-on-one with students to improve their study skills. I have worked after school with students who were in my class, as well as with tutoring students at their homes. I have developed a toolbox of strategies to work with students who struggle with studying, but typically study skills should be very tailored to what works for each child.
