Hello!

My name is Alison and I love to teach!

I truly have a passion for helping students to better understand math and science, and to help build their confidence and remove any fears or insecurities that they may have developed. As I teach and work problems with a student, I also emphasize study skills such as time-management and organization, as well as test taking skills and problem solving strategies. I use my real-world engineering experience to broaden my student's education.

I began tutoring at Western Washington University's Tutorial Center while studying Geology about 13 years ago. After earning a BS in Geology and a MS in Civil Engineering, I worked as a Professional Engineer (PE License current) for 6 years before returning to my favorite job, tutoring, 3 years ago.

I have experience working with students of all ages, including college students. Subjects include basic math through calculus, chemistry, geology, engineering, ISEE and SAT test preparation, and more. I look forward to working with you!

Algebra 1

Students often have a hard time transitioning from using only numbers to using numbers and variables in their math work. I have tutored many students of all ages in algebra, with great results. I begin by showing them how the variables actually represent numbers and go from there. My experience includes tutoring college students who have made their mind up about math and need help overcoming their fears by seeing math as something that they CAN indeed do, and do well.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have experience tutoring several children between the ages of 6 and 11 in nearly all subjects, including math, reading, vocabulary, history, English, social studies, life science, health, etc. I have a letter of recommendation from the owner of a tutoring agency in Los Angeles that I worked with for 2 years, as well as recommendation letters from two of the childrens' parents.

ISEE

My tutoring experience includes years of working with elementary, middle and high school students in nearly all subjects. I recently tutored 8th grade students for the Upper Level ISEE exam, and covered material for the Lower and Middle levels as well. I am very familiar with the ERB's testing materials and utilize their guide and online resources as well as the 2013 edition of Cracking the SSAT and ISEE (by The Princeton Review) to plan lessons. Civil Engineering

I am qualified to tutor civil engineering courses based on my education, including a BS in environmental and engineering geology from Western Washington University (WWU) and an MS in engineering with a specialty of geotechnical engineering (a branch of civil engineering) from University of Washington (UW). Cancellation: 12 hours notice required

I will provide some leniency in my cancellation policy for emergencies and sickness, but please provide as much notice as possible. Groups will be charged at a higher rate. One hour minimum charge.
