I have worked as a classroom teaching assistant and tutor since 2007. In the classroom, I have helped teach introductory physics classes at the University of Washington and Washington University in St Louis. I also have worked with these students individually on homework problems or test preparation. As an independent tutor, I have helped students with Algebra/Algebra 2, Pre-Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, and preparation for standardized tests (SAT, ACT, GRE math).

Students have often said that I am a very clear, patient, and thorough tutor. I let the students do as much of the work independently as possible and use "leading questions" so that students can relate previous knowledge to new material and stay involved in the learning process. Tutoring is very fulfilling for me, and I always enjoy seeing the progress students make as they gain confidence and understanding of the material.

Algebra 1

I have worked with algebra students of middle school age through college. I focus on emphasizing the underlying logic of the concepts and building on prior knowledge while incorporating new material. Some of my areas of greatest experience are: properties of exponents and roots, writing and graphing linear equations and inequalities, probabilities, interpretation of graphs and data tables, and properties of functions.

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is one of the subjects I tutor most frequently. Some of the topics I have experience with include: conic sections, systems of linear equations and inequalities, matrix operations, factoring and graphing polynomial equations, and exponential and logarithmic equations.

Physics

Physics is another subject I tutor frequently and was my focus as an undergraduate and graduate student (at Washington University in St Louis and the University of Washington - Seattle, respectively). I have assistant-taught introductory college level physics classes for four years. GRE

I took the general GRE in 2010, scoring 790/800 on quantitative reasoning and 740/800 on verbal reasoning. Many of my GRE students have had backgrounds in the humanities, so have not taken math classes for several years. By working through previous GRE problems together, students can practice the specific rules of algebra, arithmetic, and geometry as they are asked about on the test, and become more confident and efficient when working through similar problems on their own.
